I buried Musya not far from the country house where she came with her kittens 10 years ago. Thank God, the ground froze only a few centimeters, and I was able to dig the grave deep enough. And I thought that Musya would be with me until the end of my life...

You wake up in the morning - Musya is gone (she always slept next to me), and my soul becomes so painful, amazingly painful... When you are almost 80, nothing can eliminate your senile loneliness, and the death of a beloved animal is an irreparable loss. Together with Musya’s death, I lost what brought me joy, and perhaps, to some extent, the meaning of life for the last 10 years. Without Musya, a completely different life will come. But still, in this half-dead body there was my favorite unique creature with the same unique feature as all of us. Not only her breath, her life, but also that uniqueness that she carried within herself disappeared into oblivion. There cannot be a person without a body, but still the secret of this world lies in the uniqueness and uniqueness of such a creature as the cat Musya was.

And no amount of chemistry can explain the origin of this uniqueness, the particularity of each living creature. We all have the same chemistry. But when, contrary to the advice of her loved ones, I did not agree to euthanize her, a cancer patient, and began to do everything possible and impossible to keep her alive for as long as possible - I put in IVs, treated her with chemistry, poured drops into her for her appetite - she was six weeks old. before her death she came again to me, who was lying in bed, and expressed her dissatisfaction in exactly the same way as then.

For what?
I sheltered her, a stray cat with kittens, gave her the happiness of her own home, and she really felt like the owner of the apartment, met and saw off guests, and always lay next to me on the desk when I was working on texts or giving interviews. I left her her beloved daughter Sweetie, and brought home her granddaughter Chernushka. And in the last days of life, instead of gratitude - such a deliberate act of disrespect! My relatives believed that this was just a protest against the pain associated with her treatment. At the same time, she, sick, crawled to me in the morning, as usual, and purred, purred... And there was nothing in her eyes except gratitude and love for me. She was on her last legs, and I stroked her head, wiped the foam oozing from her mouth, she opened her eyes and looked at me with love. Perhaps I am wrong, but I have formed the conviction that even her passing life, these last days, were valuable for her. And I think that cats value their lives no less than we humans do, that they are ready to live on painkillers than not to live at all. It seems to me that in the advice to euthanize a sick cat there is a lot of our Russian character: we do not know how to value our lives, and even more so we do not value the lives of our animals.

The day before her death, I suddenly realized that with my article “Will my cat Musya go to heaven” (which I wrote many years ago, but never sent to the editor), with its rather frivolous discussions about heaven and death, I provoked this suffering is for himself, and above all for Musya.
