Pyrantel for cats: indications and instructions for use, reviews

Pyrantel (lat. Pyrantel) is an affordable, widely used anthelmintic drug that is also used to treat cats, although not as often as dogs. It paralyzes and deactivates the nervous system of the main types of roundworms that can live in the body of cats and attach to their intestines. It also has a certain effect against tapeworms. Due to the prevalence of intestinal worms in young kittens, as well as the likelihood of parasite infection through contact with contaminated soil, food and other environmental objects, this medication is an excellent way to prevent major feline helminthiasis.

Pyrantel salts (embonate or pamoate) are produced in veterinary medicine under the trademarks Prazicide, Nemex, Strongid, Drontal, etc.

Dosage form and general description

The medication is produced in two dosage forms - tablets and suspension. The tablets contain 250 mg of pyrantel pamoate. The composition also includes auxiliary components:

  • microcrystalline cellulose;
  • talc;
  • lactose;
  • magnesium stearate;
  • silicon dioxide, etc.

The tablets are packaged in blisters of 3 pieces. Each blister is individually packaged in a cardboard box and comes with instructions for use.

The suspension is externally white or yellowish in color and has a slightly viscous consistency and is packaged in polymer bottles, usually 15 ml, but sometimes other volumes are found - 10 or 20 ml. 1 ml of medicinal liquid contains 50 mg of active substance. Also includes:

  • purified water;
  • glycerol;
  • simethicone emulsion;
  • sorbitol, etc.

The suspension is often used to treat children. For this reason, the composition includes sucrose, which gives the medicine a sweet taste, and various flavorings.

What is the drug Pirantel

The main active ingredient of the medicine is the chemical compound pyrantel pamoate. It is active against most types of roundworms and protozoan microorganisms.

Pyrantel is available in tablet form and suspension.

One tablet of the drug contains 250 mg of active ingredient. In addition, it includes:

  • magnesium stearate;
  • corn starch;
  • gelatin;
  • talc.

The above components are not active against helminths and serve as excipients.

Each tablet, which is oval in shape and pale yellow in color, is placed in a blister, which, in turn, is packaged in a cardboard box. Usually there are three tablets in a blister.

The Pyrantel package contains 3 tablets

The suspension contains 250 mg of active substance per 5 ml. This dosage form is more convenient for animals to take than tablets. However, the additional additives included in the drug (flavors, dyes, sucrose, sorbic acid, sorbitol) can be unpleasant for the cat, so the tablet form has found wider use in veterinary medicine.

The suspension is available in 15 ml dark glass bottles, which are packaged in a cardboard box.

The suspension is easier to dose for small cats and kittens

The drug should be stored in a dark place at a temperature not exceeding +25 degrees Celsius. This applies to both forms of release.

Active components and action

The medical product is developed in tablet form, as well as in the form of a suspension. The pills contain 250 milligrams of the main component - pyrantel pamoate. In addition to the base, the following ingredients have been added to the medicine:

  • lactose and talc;
  • silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate;
  • polyvinylpyrrolidone K-30;
  • cellulose;
  • corn starch;
  • silica;
  • methylparaben, starch glycolate and sodium propylparaben.

The suspension contains 735 mg of the active ingredient - pyrantel pamoate. There are also ingredients such as:

  • distilled water;
  • sorbitol;
  • sorbic acid;
  • polysorbate 80;
  • xanthan gum;
  • simethicone emulsion;
  • coloring - caramel and flavoring - chocolate and ice cream;
  • methyl parahydroxybenzoate;
  • sucrose;
  • propyl parahydroxybenzoate;
  • glycerol

The action of the drug is aimed at the death of adults and larvae, but the drug does not eliminate laid eggs.

As a result of taking the drug, the active substance is concentrated in the intestines after 2 hours and helps eliminate endoparasites. The drug blocks the transmission of impulses from the nervous system, which contributes to the onset of paralysis and provokes the death of helminths. The instructions say that the medication eliminates larvae and mature helminths, but does not harm the eggs, so for a complete cure it is recommended to repeat the procedure after 15 days.

Pharmacokinetics

After oral administration (swallowing), Pyrantel is poorly absorbed in the intestines of a pet. This leads to the fact that, with relatively low toxicity, most of the anthelmintic enters the large intestine and destroys the parasites living there.

Drinking Pyrantel is processed in the liver for a short time. In mammals, including the cat, half of the administered dose is excreted through the kidneys in the same form.

The product is based on bee propolis, which has a pronounced antibacterial and antiviral effect. I like the drug because it is completely natural, based on herbs, and this is very important for prevention.”

Can cats have Pirantel?

Pyrantel pamoate is often included in antiparasitic drugs for animals, but it is usually combined with other active ingredients, such as praziquantel. The question of whether Pirantel can be given to a cat worries many pet owners. It is possible to use a human drug for cats, but preferably in the form of a suspension, since it is difficult to calculate the exact dose in tablets due to the high concentration of the active substance.

An overdose of a medicine can have serious consequences, so you should not self-medicate. It is necessary to consult a doctor so that he can correctly calculate the dose. In addition, the medication acts on certain types of parasites, so you must first get tested.

Instructions for use and dosage

Before use, you must read the instructions and carefully calculate the dosage.

If the dose is not enough, the medicine will not work. In case of overdose, the animal may be poisoned!

If you use pyrantel tablets:

  1. Dosage for an adult cat is 5 mg per 1 kg of weight.
  2. Dosage for an adult dog is 5 mg if the animal weighs more than 2.5 kg. 10 mg is prescribed for a dog weighing up to 2.5 kg.
  3. For puppies weighing up to 2.5 kg, the dosage is 10 mg.
  4. For kittens weighing over 500 grams, the recommended dose of the drug is 3 mg.

If the puppy weighs less than 1 kg, you cannot give him medicine. If the kitten's weight is less than 500 grams, do not give the medicine.

The drug pyrantel, indications for use and contraindications

Dose for adult dogs

For adults, the medicine is given once. It is recommended to crush the tablets before this. The resulting powder is poured onto the root of the tongue. This is difficult, especially if the dog is a large breed. I have a German Shepherd, so I will share my experience.

The dog can be given any form of pyrantel or tablet or suspension

If the dog is obedient, you need to give it the command to sit. After the animal sits down, the command is given to show your teeth. With my left hand I take the dog under the lower jaw. I take the upper jaw with the thumb and ring fingers of my right hand. A spoon with medicine is held between the index and middle fingers of the right hand. I quickly pour the medicine onto the root of my tongue and close my jaws. I hold my jaws until the dog swallows the drug. She tries to resist and close her mouth. The main thing here is fast work of the right hand.

If possible, the procedure is carried out together. Someone is holding a dog, someone is giving it medicine.

The suspension is administered using a syringe without a needle. Carefully place the syringe head after the fourth premolar and inject the medication.

For adult cats

The cat can be wrapped in a blanket so that it does not resist. Or, fix it between your knees. With your left hand, take it by the scruff of the neck and tilt the cat’s head back. In this position she will open her mouth. Pour the medicine onto the root of the tongue and close the animal's mouth. Hold your jaws so as not to cover the cat's nose. Until he swallows the medicine.

The medicine can be mixed with food

The suspension is administered in the same way as it is administered to dogs.

What parasites does Pirantel destroy?

In the body of cats and humans, Pirantel acts on roundworms:

  • pinworms;
  • roundworm;
  • trichostrongylide;
  • whipworms;
  • intestinal eels;
  • Trichinella;
  • hookworm

Pirantel is not effective against flat tape parasites and flukes. The most common infections in cats are roundworms and pinworms. They can easily be seen in animal feces and vomit. These are small, short and very mobile white worms.

Indications for use

According to the instructions for use, Pirantel for cats is used, as for people, to destroy the following types of worms:

  • pinworms;
  • intestinal acne;
  • trichostrongylide;
  • hookworm;
  • roundworm;
  • Trichinella.

The antiparasitic agent does not affect tapeworms. It exhibits weak activity against whipworms, so other drugs are selected to kill them.

Note! Pyrantel is not used to prevent helminthic infestations in cats. For these purposes, it is better to choose a medicine designed specifically for animals.

What worms are found in both cats and people?

Parasites are divided into 3 large groups: cestodes, trematodes and nematodes. Most often, roundworms are found in representatives of the cat family: hookworms, toxascarids, toxocaras, trichinella, roundworms, etc. Less often, they show signs of the presence of tapeworms (tapeworms, cucumber tapeworms, alveococci, Mesocestoides lineatus, Hydatigera taeniaformis) and flat flukes ( pulmonary flukes, opisthorchis, cat flukes, Pseudamphistomum truncatum, Metorchis bilis, Euparyphium melis).

Can Pyrantel be used to treat helminthiasis in cats?

The active substance included in Pyrantel is often used in the manufacture of veterinary antiparasitic drugs in combination with other active ingredients, for example fenbendazole, febtal. The more ingredients a medicine contains, the more expensive it is. In order to save money, many cat owners who have been diagnosed with roundworms use Pirantel to kill parasites in their pets. Pyrantel is not prohibited from being used to treat parasitic infections in cats. It is recommended to give preference to the suspension, since it is quite difficult to calculate the exact dosage of the drug in tablet form.

How it works

Pyrantel effectively destroys internal parasites. The principle of its action is to block the transmission of nerve impulses. As a result of such exposure, paralysis occurs, which leads to the death of the worms. After ingestion, the maximum concentration of the active substance occurs in just 1-3 hours, so the drug has a rapid action. It is capable of destroying only larvae and mature individuals, but does not affect parasite eggs.

The peculiarity of the medicine is that it is practically not absorbed into the bloodstream. The active substance remains in the intestines, and therefore effectively destroys roundworms of various types. Partially the active component is metabolized in the liver. Mostly excreted in feces. The antiparasitic agent helps the worms to come out, so they will not poison the animal’s body with decomposition products after death, which means the risk of intoxication is reduced.

Mechanism of action

Pyrantel, like all tetrahydropyrimidines, acts in the nervous system of worms as an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (also known as AChE), an enzyme that hydrolyzes acetylcholine (ACh). The ACh molecule is involved in the transmission of nerve signals to muscles (called neuromuscular junctions) and between neurons in the brain (called cholinergic brain synapses). The role of AChE is to stop the transmission of nerve signals in which acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter.

Inhibition of AChE massively disrupts the normal movements of parasites. What is harmful to parasitic worms is that the drug paralyzes them and they die more or less quickly or are expelled from the intestines because they lose the ability to stay attached to the intestinal wall.

Features of application

The drug Pirantel should be used only as prescribed by a veterinarian in accordance with the instructions.

“Pyrantel” for cats against worms: dosage

The medicine is produced in the form of a suspension (20 ml) or tablets (three pieces per package). 1 tablet = 5 ml of solution = 0.25 g of active ingredient.

How is Pirantel prescribed for cats? The dosage in tablets (250 mg of the active element) is 5 mg/1 kg, and the suspension is 1.15 ml/1 kg. Before the procedure, the cat must be weighed. An average adult animal is given half a tablet or 2.5 ml of solution (a measuring spoon is included). For kittens after reaching three weeks of age, a quarter of a tablet or measuring spoon is recommended.

It is recommended to administer the drug in the morning, an hour after breakfast. If the animal vomits the medicine, the procedure should be repeated again. A new dose of the drug “Pyrantel” for cats (the dosage in tablets and suspension must again be observed) is carried out after 10 days.

Reception scheme

After determining the required dosage, the drug is taken once a day for 3 days. It is highly desirable that the times of taking the medication coincide with each other. For example, if on the first day the cat was given Pirantel in the morning, then the next dose is given the next day, also in the first half of the day.

As noted above, this drug does not work at all against parasite eggs, therefore, within one course, treatment does not seem to be complete. It is recommended to repeat it after 3 weeks, that is, at a time when new individuals hatch from eggs, but do not reach the age when they themselves are able to lay eggs.

It is permissible to take Pirantel prophylactically, but only if there are indications for it. However, it is not recommended to use this drug for such purposes more than once every six months.

Method of treating an animal with tablets

Pyrantel in liquid form is as effective as in tablet form. However, it is better to give kittens a suspension, because feeding them a tablet will require a lot of effort. The dosage of the drug for roundworms depends on the weight of the pet. The younger the animal, the less medicine it needs. Information on the doses of the drug in tablet form and the method of its use is presented in the table:

The table shows standard doses of the drug. The amount required by a particular animal can be adjusted by a veterinarian, taking into account the degree of parasite infestation, the characteristics of its body and other factors. Pyrantel is ineffective against helminth eggs. After the surviving larvae hatch, it is recommended to give the medicine to the cat again. This should be done after about 21 days. The table shows a minimum weight of 1 kg for a reason. You can start giving the medicine to kittens only after they reach 3 weeks of age.

Can it be used in pregnant cats and kittens?

Pyrantel has a toxic effect on the animal's body, so its use during pregnancy is not recommended.

As for the treatment of kittens with Pirantel, it is only possible for those animals that weigh more than 0.5 kilograms. For them, the drug should be used in the form of a suspension.

For cats, the suspension is injected into the mouth from the side from a syringe without a needle.

Use of suspension

It is much more convenient to measure the required amount of suspension. For this purpose, there is a plastic measuring spoon in the medicine box. The contents of 1 spoon corresponds to 1 tablet of the drug. The medicinal liquid should be administered to the pet during morning feeding or an hour after the first meal. It is convenient to do this with a syringe without a needle. To prevent the cat from spitting out the product, it is recommended to pour it behind the cheek or on the root of the tongue.

If he vomits after taking the product, the procedure must be repeated. The suspension requires a single use. However, in case of severe parasite infestation, you can re-give your four-legged pet the medicine 72 hours after the first dose. The drug can be used for prophylactic purposes. This is done if there are strict indications. It is not advisable to use Pirantel more than once every 6 months.

How to give a pill to a cat

The Pirantel tablet has a bitter taste, so the cat will not be able to take it on its own. To do this, grind it to a powder and pour it evenly into a bowl of food. It is important to give a small portion of food so that the animal eats it completely.

No matter how much I tried to give different tablets to cats with food, none of them would eat them, even if the tablets themselves had the smell of fish or beef. Neither raw minced meat, nor a piece of butter, nor dry food fit. Now I don't even try to give medicine that way. It is safer to put a piece of the tablet directly into your mouth and be sure that the medicine is taken in the right amount.

It is also possible to give part of the tablet to the cat as a whole. To do this, you should pick up the animal, tilt its head back a little, open the cat’s mouth and put the medicine on the root of the tongue, deeper into the throat. Your pet will reflexively swallow the medicine whole. During this procedure, it is important to secure the cat tightly (for example, wrap it in a towel) so that it does not scratch the owner.

What to do in case of overdose

Symptoms of an overdose of Pyrantel:

  • vomit;
  • loss of appetite;
  • tremor of the limbs;
  • apathy, lethargy;
  • strong heartbeat.

In this case, the animal needs to rinse the stomach (with boiled water), give some absorbent (activated carbon) and urgently seek help from the nearest veterinary clinic.

Personal safety measures when in contact with the drug

The drug has low toxicity for humans, but it should be remembered that when working with it the following safety rules should be observed:

  • carry out all manipulations with rubber gloves;
  • do not allow the drug to get into the eyes and mucous membranes;
  • After the procedure, wash your hands thoroughly with soap.

How to give a cat a deworming suspension?

First, let's figure out how to give a cat an anti-worm suspension and whether it is possible to use such a dosage form in your conditions. Let us immediately note that many cats have a frightening reaction to the suspension - foamy saliva, coughing and sneezing. If you do not take this convention into account, there are only advantages to using a suspension.

Almost always, a bottle of suspension is equipped with a dispenser. If there is no dispenser, the suspension can be given using a syringe, and to the kitten using a pipette. Before taking the suspension, hold the bottle in your palm and shake it thoroughly. By heating from the palm of your hand, the suspension mixes faster and acquires a homogeneous consistency.

Having collected the required amount of suspension, take the cat in your arms and try to calm it down. If your pet does not have a fighting temperament, you need to place it with its back to the wall (so that there is nowhere to back away), open its mouth and carefully pour the suspension onto the root of the tongue.

Irritation of the root of the tongue leads to reflex swallowing. If your pet intends to bite and scratch, it must be wrapped in a towel and held in your arms. When the cat is restricted in movement, the risk of the suspension entering the respiratory tract increases, so be very careful.

If the cat is too resistant to applying the suspension to the root of the tongue, the drug can be mixed with a small amount of food. The experience of owners shows that cats almost do not feel a deworming suspension mixed with cottage cheese or other fermented milk products.

Like any other anti-worm medications, it is recommended to give the suspension in the morning before meals. This is explained quite simply - when food is in the intestines, the rate of absorption of the drug decreases, and the maximum therapeutic effect takes longer to achieve. After administration of the drug, the cat can be fed after 1–1.5 hours, unless the instructions contain other conditions. By the way, the suspension acts quite gently, so it does not require the use of laxatives and rarely leads to disruption of the gastrointestinal tract.

The annotations of almost all suspensions indicate that the drugs have no contraindications or side effects. However, practice shows that the prevention of worms can lead to the following complications: mild apathy, nausea, increased salivation. Symptoms should be monitored, but intervention should not be made unless necessary. If the symptoms do not go away within a few hours, the cat needs to be given an adsorbent.

In rare cases, and only if there is a severe overdose, a cat can be poisoned by the deworming suspension. If you observe signs of intoxication: the cat has started vomiting, diarrhea, or the base body temperature has dropped, contact your veterinarian immediately. Adsorbents and laxatives allow for effective cleansing, since most of the active ingredients in suspensions are absorbed into the blood.

Contraindications, side effects

This drug should not be used in the following cases:

  • individual intolerance to the ingredients of the drug;
  • pregnancy;
  • lactation period;
  • age up to 3 months;
  • body weight up to 0.5 kg;
  • infectious pathologies;
  • liver and kidney problems;
  • weakening of the body after a recent illness or surgery;
  • taking piperazine and other antiparasitic drugs;
  • exhaustion - no matter how much a cat weighs, it should not show signs of underweight.

When using the medicine correctly, the risk of negative consequences for the health of your four-legged pet is minimal. After taking Pirantel, your pet may experience the following side effects:

  • allergic reaction;
  • vomit;
  • nausea;
  • lethargy;
  • diarrhea;
  • indigestion;
  • itching in the ears.

Adverse reactions in cats

When used correctly, the drug does not cause side effects. If deviations develop, cats should stop taking the drug and use medications for symptomatic therapy; the allergic reaction is eliminated through the use of antihistamines. Rarely, often due to individual characteristics, the following deviations may appear:

  • nausea;
  • vomit;
  • excessive salivation;
  • diarrhea;
  • refusal of food;
  • apathy;
  • allergy;
  • lack of activity;
  • itching;
  • redness of the skin;
  • deviations in the functioning of the digestive system.

Effective and popular remedies for worms

Upon detailed study of the instructions for various anthelmintic drugs, we can come to the conclusion that there are two categories of deworming tablets for cats: the first contain only one type of active ingredient, and can protect the pet from only one type of parasite. The latter have two components that effectively fight against several types of worms. They can be called complex or broad-spectrum.

The second group of drugs is quite extensive, and generally produces the same results after use. Among them, we highlight deworming tablets for cats, reviews of which are the most positive:

  • Drontal;
  • Pratel;
  • Milbemax;
  • Kanikquantel;
  • Febtal;
  • Dirofen;
  • Polyverkan (sugar cubes);

In addition, for ease of use and dosage, anthelmintic drugs are produced in the form of a suspension (Prasitel, Dirofen, Prazicide), as well as in the form of drops on the withers (profender, inspector, advocate) and paste.

So, a list of tablets for worms with names and reviews about each.

Drontal

It is no coincidence that the drug Drontal was in first place on the list - these are deworming tablets for cats, reviews of which are more common than others. According to them, the quality and effectiveness of the drug produced in Germany is beyond doubt. The main components in it are pyrantel and praziquantel, which have a detrimental effect on round and tapeworms. The dosage of one tablet is designed for an adult cat weighing 4 kg.

It is better to give the tablet to the animal in the morning, before meals. You can feed after 1-1.5 hours. If your pet flatly refuses the tablet, you can crush it and mix it with a small amount of water, and pour it into the mouth using a syringe (without a needle!). You can also crush the tablet and mix it with a small amount of tasty cat food.

Contraindicated in kittens under three weeks of age and pregnant cats. In other cases, if the instructions are followed, it does not cause side effects or negative reactions. With the exception of situations where the pet has an individual intolerance to any components.

Milbemax

It is worth paying attention to the complex anthelmintic Milbemax. This drug has a composition different from the others: in addition to praziquantel, it contains milbemycin oxime

This chemical has a detrimental effect on roundworms living in the intestines, as well as heartworms (parasitic in the heart and blood vessels). It equally effectively affects both adult parasites and their larvae.

You can now view the current price of the drug and buy it right here:

Available in two types: for kittens and adult cats. Contraindications include: age less than 6 weeks, cat pregnancy, and animal weight less than 0.5 kg. After treatment with these deworming tablets for cats, the reviews are in most cases commendable. A positive result is achieved even after a single use.

Dirofen

Available in the form of tablets, suspension and paste. The suspension is especially convenient for determining the correct dosage for kittens - it comes with a dispenser syringe. The paste and suspension also contain pumpkin oil, which helps restore the intestines after damage by parasites.

Dirofen is a complex drug for the treatment and prevention of cestodosis and nematodosis in adult cats and kittens. The active substances are praziquantel and pyrantel pamoate, and in tablets - fenbendazole and pyrantel pamoate.

The drug has established itself as a fast-acting and effective means for deworming animals.

Symptoms of poisoning

If the dosage is calculated incorrectly, Pyrantel can cause poisoning in a cat, although it is considered to be of low toxicity for humans. The following symptoms indicate poisoning:

  • nausea and severe vomiting;
  • cardiopalmus;
  • weakness;
  • excessive excitement;
  • lack of appetite;
  • impaired coordination of movements;
  • tremor of the limbs;
  • increased salivation;
  • convulsions;
  • heavy sweating.

If symptoms of overdose are detected, the pet should rinse its stomach. Then give an adsorbent to remove the toxic substance from the body. Symptomatic treatment or maintenance therapy (vitamins, immunostimulants, etc.) may also be required.

Replacement of "Pirantel"

If the animal is allergic to the active component or other ingredients of the drug, the veterinarian suggests using similar antiparasitic medications to eliminate the infestation. Often, the veterinarian recommends deworming medications such as:

Choosing a remedy on your own may not eliminate the problem, but only complicate the pet’s condition, so you should begin treatment only after going to the doctor and taking tests to determine the type of parasites. The doctor, relying on the severity of the infection and the condition of the animal’s body, can accurately calculate the dose of the drug.

Reviews

I have been deworming my cats and dog with pyrantel for about ten years now. Half a tablet for cats. The vet advised. All animals tolerate the procedure well.

If you give pyrantel (and besides it there is nothing better, or the same), then drink an absorbent paste, which they drink in case of poisoning to remove all the rubbish from the body.

Pyrantel is not an option for cats, because it only fights one type of helminth.

Senior cat addict

Pyrantel is an effective drug for eliminating parasites in cats. However, it is worth remembering that this medicine is active only against certain types of worms, so it can only be used after examination by a veterinarian. Also, this drug has toxic properties, so its use is possible only in strict accordance with the instructions.

Trade names and prices

Anthelmintic drugs for animals containing pyrantel are Drontal, Dirofen, Trianthelm, Pyraprasit, Prasimitel, Enwire, Dehinel and others.

Pyrantel itself is an inexpensive drug, so the price of the above drugs depends on the additional components and the manufacturer.

The cheapest drug is most likely Ukrainian-made Envir. One Drontal tablet, used per 10 kg of dog weight, costs from 1.5 dollars in Russia, while in Ukraine it will cost much less. Dirofen will cost a little less per kilogram of weight. Trianthelm, which is distinguished by the presence of oxantel pamoate in its composition, rather than the more common praziquantel and fbantel, will cost a little more, and it is now difficult to find it on sale.

Many owners prefer to use pyrantel, which is sold in regular pharmacies and is intended for people. They write in reviews that they trust such drugs more, believing in a lower risk of getting a counterfeit. The price of the suspension (250 mg of pyrantel) in this case will cost less than $1, and it will be enough for a dog up to 50 kg. Tablets are even cheaper to use.

Cost of drugs

Below is a table with prices for popular drugs. The price is indicated per pack or per piece.

Nameprice
Albendazole120-400 rubles
Dirofen125-180 rubles
Drontal150-170 rubles (1 tablet), 280-340 rubles (2 tablets), 1150-1185 rubles (20 pieces)
Kanikquantel Plus99 rubles - 1872 rubles (depending on quantity)
Levamisole40-145 rubles
Mebendazole90-120 rubles
Milbemax300-479 rubles
Pirantel22-60 rubles
Poliverkan75-550 rubles
PrazicideDrops - from 155 rubles, suspension - from 100 rubles, tablets - from 110 rubles

The cost of medicines is affected by:

  • quantity of anthelmintic (packaging for single use or multiple use);
  • efficiency;
  • the presence or absence of additional elements included with the medicine (pipette, syringe, passport stickers);
  • cost of components;
  • the complexity of the drug manufacturing process;
  • manufacturer country.

Imported medicines are more expensive than domestic ones. However, a high price does not always indicate greater efficiency and safety. Domestic analogues are not inferior in quality to foreign ones. Also, different forms of anthelmintics cost differently. The price also depends on the packaging of the medicines. Some medicines are sold in individual form - powders, tablets. The cost in different pharmacy chains also differs. On average, the cost of anti-worm medications for kittens varies from 100 to 400 rubles.

Analogues of Pyrantel: composition, method of application, cost

This drug has many analogues that differ from each other in composition, method of use and cost. You cannot replace one medicine with another on your own. The decision to replace is made by the veterinarian, taking into account the clinical picture, age and weight of the four-legged patient, as well as the characteristics of his body. Varieties

The anthelmintic is sold in a regular human pharmacy. It comes in the form of yellow tablets or a suspension of the same shade.

Pills.

Each Pyrantel tablet contains 250 mg of active ingredient. This dose is calculated for 50 kg of weight. For dogs of small and medium breeds, a veterinarian will help determine the required amount of medication.

Suspension.

The concentration of pyrantel pamoate in the liquid form of the anthelmintic is lower, so it is chosen in cases where it is difficult to separate the tablet for dosage accuracy or there are difficulties in taking the medication in tablet form in an animal.

Since the drug contains toxic components, an overdose can cause serious consequences

It is important to accurately calculate the required dose. To do this, you can use the table:

Dog's body weight, Number of tablets, pcs.

1 kg0.04
2 kg0.08
3 kg0.06
5 kg0.1
10 kg1 tablet
15 kg1.5 tablets

Quantity of suspension, ml

1 kg0.2
2 kg0.3
3 kg0.4
5 kg0.5
10 kg2 ml
15 kg3 ml

and further at the rate of 10 mg of active substance per 1 kg of animal body weight

The medicine in any form is given in the morning feeding: with food or after food. It is more difficult to force a dog to swallow a tablet, so the liquid form is often used for treatment. The sweet taste prompts your pet to think that he is being given a treat. In case of severe infection, repeat deworming after 10 days.

Important! Dogs weighing less than 1 kg should not be given Pirantel!
