4615Pavel

Febtal is a broad-spectrum antihelminthic agent. It can show good results when used against nematodes, cestodes and other similar parasites. The instructions for using Febtal for cats state that the drug also fights diseases that are caused by mixed effects on the cat’s body. The medicine can be classified as moderately toxic, but it does not irritate the mucous membranes. In cases of treatment of a pregnant cat, embryonic development remains normal. This is confirmed by research.

What is Febtal

Febtal is an anthelmintic drug available in the form of tablets, granulates and suspensions. The drug inhibits the synthesis of tubulin, which affects the functioning of the microtubular apparatus of the parasite cells (changes the intracellular protein structures that make up the cytoskeleton). This leads to the death of the worm. The drug is active against adult forms, larvae and eggs.

The manufacturer of the medicine is Agrovetzashchita LLC (Russia)

What does the drug contain?

The medicine works due to the fenbendazole contained in it (also known as 5-phenyl-thio-2-benzimidazole carbamate). This substance is easily absorbed in the intestines and distributed throughout all organs and tissues of the cat. Within 15–20 minutes after taking the drug, the destruction of parasites begins. Fenbendazole is excreted within 24 hours in feces and urine. Excipients in the composition are lactose and potato starch (calcium stearate is also added to the tablet product as an additional component).

The advantage of Febtal is a short course - after 3 days the cat will be cleared of worms

What is the difference between tablets, granules and suspension

Febtal tablets are round, gray in color. On one side, they have a groove running exactly in the middle (it is needed so that the product can be easily broken into halves); on the other side, the logo of the manufacturing company is embossed - a shield with a cross in the center. One tablet weighs 0.6 grams and contains 150 mg of 5-phenyl-thio-2-benzimidazole carbamate. The tableted drug is sold in boxes, each containing a blister with 6 cells.

The granular preparation is brown in color. The granules are small, easily soluble (the diameter of each “grain” is 0.2–1.5 mm). One gram of granulate contains 222 mg of fenbendazole. This form of medicine is sold in large packages - in polymer bags of 0.5 kg or in polymer buckets of 1 kg (such a package will be too large to treat one cat, it is mainly bought for use in veterinary clinics and animal nurseries).

Febtal tablets are sold in packs of 6 pieces - this is enough for 2 courses

In veterinary pharmacies you can find another version of the anthelmintic drug - it is called Febtal-Combo. This product has only one manufacturer in common with Febtal tablets and granules and has similar indications . Otherwise, it is a completely different drug. It is based on prazinquantel and albendazole (auxiliary components - nipagin, nipazole, lactose, Tween-80, water). This product is produced in the form of a suspension, packaged in pipettes (1, 2, 5 ml) or glass jars (7, 10 and 20 ml); a dispenser syringe must be placed in the box with the latter. There are Febtal-Combo options for kittens and adult cats.

Febtal-Combo suspension for kittens and adult cats has the same composition and dosage of active substances - the only difference is that the kit comes with different dispensing syringes

Storage conditions

The product is good for 12 months from the date of release of the dosage form, unless storage conditions are violated. Both tablets and suspension should be stored at an ambient temperature of 0°C to 25°C. Choose a storage location so that the drug is always out of reach of children and pets. If the manufacturer's packaging is damaged, dispose of the medicine without delay.

There are good reviews about Febtal for cats. However, owners note that, despite the manufacturer’s promise of a pleasant taste, animals take the drug with reluctance, which is accompanied by increased salivation and even vomiting. It is very rare on the Internet to find reviews about Febtal that speak of the low effect of the drug.

What are the indications for Febtal?

The indication for taking Febtal is to rid a cat of round and tapeworms. Tablets, granules and suspension help cure the following parasitic diseases:

  • Ascariasis is an infection with roundworms Ascarididae.
  • Toxocariasis is an infection with the larvae of the roundworm Toxocara canis, which infects the lungs and bronchi of an animal.
  • Bunostomiasis is a disease caused by Bunostomum worms.
  • Uncinariasis is a helminthic infestation caused by the nematode Uncinaria stenocephala.
  • Hookworm is an infection of a cat with hookworms (roundworms from the suborder Strongylida).
  • Dipilidiosis is an infestation by the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum (cucumber tapeworm).

Some worms live in a cat’s body for years, causing only poor health in their owner; if infected with other parasites, a cat can die within a couple of months or even days

How to treat your cat with Febtal

Febtal can be given to cats older than 12 weeks. For small animals weighing less than 0.5 kg, the product is rarely used due to difficulties in determining the exact dosage .

One tablet is designed for an animal weighing 3 kilograms. Therefore, if a cat weighs 1.5 kg, then he should be given half a tablet; A 6-kilogram animal needs to swallow 2 pieces at once. If granulate is used, then the calculation is carried out according to the formula: 1 gram of the drug for every 4 kg of animal weight.

The Febtal-Combo suspension is poured into the mouth using a measuring syringe. The required dosage is determined by the formula: 1 ml of suspension per 1 kg of animal weight. Unlike tablets and granules, the suspension is quite easy to measure for babies lighter than 0.5 kg. For them, you need to buy a drug marked “for kittens” and use the small syringe included in the kit to measure 0.5 ml. This amount of medicine should be mixed with 0.3 ml of warm water and given to the animal.

The duration of treatment for any form of Febtal is 3 days. If during this time it was not possible to rid the cat of worms, then most likely the animal is not infected with round or tapeworms (the drug is not effective against other types of parasites).

The manufacturer recommends giving tablets and granules to your cat after mixing them with his favorite food.

Important: Febtal is an anthelmintic included by veterinarians in the complex treatment of parasitic infestation. In addition to it, it is recommended to take other medications - vitamins, enterosorbents, laxatives. They are needed to quickly remove dead worms from the intestines, as well as to improve the well-being of a cat whose health has been undermined by parasites.

Mechanism of action

Febtal is a strong substance that will help cope with helminths. This means that the drug acts on all stages of the growth of the parasite that has settled inside the cat. The effect of the drug extends to ribbon and round varieties.

They give the cat febtal

As soon as the tablet or liquid enters the animal's body, the parasites become paralyzed. They will no longer be able to attach to the intestinal walls, and therefore will be released along with the feces. This way you can avoid harm to the cat’s body. Complete removal of parasites will occur within 24 hours.

The frequency of use of the drug depends on the purpose of administration. If the medicine was prescribed by a veterinarian as a preventative measure, then it is necessary to give it to the animal once a quarter, and also use a reduced dosage. It is strictly forbidden to use Febtal without reading the instructions.

Are there any prohibitions on using Febtal?

According to the degree of toxic effects on the body, the drug is classified as a low-hazard substance. When taken in recommended dosages, there are no side effects. An overdose can manifest itself in nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (they go away on their own within an hour). There are no strict contraindications for taking Febtal.

Febtal, like any other antiparasitic drug, should not be given to emaciated animals and cats with infectious diseases in the acute stage. First, you need to stabilize the cat’s condition and only after that carry out a course of anthelmintics.

Febtal can be given to pregnant and lactating cats

Storage conditions for Febtal®-Combo

When using the drug according to the instructions, no side effects or complications are observed. If the animal's individual sensitivity to fenbendazole increases and allergic reactions occur, stop using the drug. No overdose symptoms have been identified in animals.

Febtal for cats - instructions for use

Side effects are most often associated with incorrect dosage or failure to follow instructions. An individual allergic reaction may develop. There are no data on cases of overdose symptoms in dogs.

Side effects are rare.

In case of increased individual sensitivity of the animal to the active components of the drug and the appearance of side effects, the use of the anthelmintic drug is discontinued.

An anthelmintic from a domestic manufacturer has virtually no contraindications. It can be used for pregnant and lactating females, as well as small puppies. You should refuse to use it only if you have an individual intolerance to the components.

Note! When using an anthelmintic for weakened or infectiously ill pets, you should consult a veterinarian.

In most cases, dogs tolerate the use of an anthelmintic well. The only exceptions to the rule are cases of intolerance to components. In this case, there is a high risk of allergies. Symptoms of reactions can be different: rashes or redness, itching, disruptions in the digestive system (vomiting, diarrhea). Increased salivation may occur due to the bitter taste.

Personal prevention

In order not to harm your body, you must use generally accepted rules of hygiene, as well as safety precautions. They are the same for working with any chemicals and medications.

Seeing a doctor

When contact occurs, the person should not eat, smoke or drink any liquid. This is because the medicine can enter the human body.

If, after interacting with the drug, an allergy appears or the medicine gets into the esophagus, you must immediately contact the clinic for an examination.

The box in which the medicine was packaged must be thrown away after use. Use for other purposes is strictly prohibited. Particles of the substance could remain on the walls.

After the course of treatment, you must wash your hands with soap so that the drug does not enter the human body.

If the cat's owner is hypersensitive to one of the active elements of Febtal, direct contact should be avoided.

When the drug gets on the mucous membrane or skin, you should immediately rinse the affected area with plenty of water.
