Serenia for cats: instructions for use, composition, dosage and price

Composition and release form of the drug

Sereniya is available in the form of an injection solution and tablets, and each form has its own application features.

As for the composition, the main active ingredient in the drug is maropitant citrate, the task of which is to stop vomiting in animals. Among other substances, it contains metacresol (a strong antiseptic) and sodium cyclodestrin (increases the solubility of the macronutrient).

Injection solution

The solution is a clear liquid with a slight yellowish tint. It goes on sale packaged in 20 ml glass bottles, sealed hermetically with rubber stoppers, which are rolled up with aluminum caps on top. The manufacturer does not produce bottles of other sizes.

Pills

The drug in tablet form is marketed in four different versions. Their composition is the same, but the difference lies in the mass and concentration of the main active ingredient, as well as additional components. Cats can be given 100 and 150 mg tablets containing 16 and 24 mg of maropitant.

Cerenia tablets for cats

Sereniya tablets, which have a yellow tint, have one advantage - the content of the active substance is stamped on one side, which eliminates the risk of exceeding the dosage (even if the packaging is lost). In addition, for more convenient separation of the tablet, a special dividing strip is provided.

Each package contains an aluminum foil blister containing four tablets.

Dosage form

In veterinary practice, Serenia is used in two forms: tablets and solution for injection.

The solution for injection contains the active ingredient maropitant citrate - 10 mg and auxiliary components: metacresol, sulfobutyl ether and water for injection. Externally, the medicine is a light yellow liquid.

Serenia tablets are intended for oral use with the active component maropitant citrate and excipients - stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, lactose, croscarmellose sodium and dye E110.

The dosage form is round, yellow tablets in dosages of 100 mg, 150 mg, 375 mg and 1000 mg with a dividing groove and the Pfizer logo.

"Serenia" refers to low-toxic drugs and safe veterinary drugs. Residues of the drug are excreted from the animal’s body through urine and feces.

With repeated doses, the medicine accumulates in the body. Dogs and cats easily take the drug. "Sereniya" has a strong therapeutic and preventive effect.

This antiemetic drug can be combined with:

  • drugs against parasites;
  • antibacterial drugs;
  • bactericidal drugs;
  • non-steroidal drugs that have an anti-inflammatory effect.

As it turned out, Serenia can interact with other medications, but only a veterinarian should prescribe a comprehensive course of therapy.

Effect of Serenia on cats

Serenia helps not only in situations where the animal feels sick or vomits due to being seasick during a trip. This drug should always be present in the veterinary medicine cabinet, since it may be needed after a course of therapy with chemical or antibacterial drugs, as well as during the cat’s recovery from anesthesia after surgery.

Serenia is an antiemetic agent that is active in vomiting of peripheral and central origin.

The main active ingredient, after administration of the drug under the skin, is absorbed in a short time and reaches the maximum serum concentration after 45 minutes. Sulfur is 90% bioavailable, 99% bound to plasma proteins, metabolized by the liver and excreted in feces. Maropitant citrate belongs to the third hazard class, that is, moderately dangerous.

Pharmacological properties

The drug is an antiemetic drug recommended for use for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes in cases of vomiting in animals.

"Serenia" can be used to treat various pathologies and infectious diseases accompanied by vomiting.

The medicine is effective for motion sickness syndrome in animals, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, and chemotherapy.

Sereniya is an antiemetic that contains the active ingredient maropitant citrate. The substance is a neurokinin receptor antagonist and inhibits the binding of substance P and the takinin group neuropeptide in the central nervous system. The drug is active against vomiting of central and peripheral origin.

The active component is rapidly absorbed after subcutaneous administration, reaching the maximum serum concentration after 45 minutes. The drug has 90% bioavailability, binds to plasma proteins by 99%, is metabolized by the liver, and is excreted in feces. According to the degree of danger, maropitant citrate is a moderately dangerous substance (hazard class 3).

Instructions for use and dosage of Serenia for cats

The drug should be given to animals in the dosages indicated in the recommendations for its use.

Injections are best suited when the cat is vomiting due to something getting into the stomach. In this case, tablets will not give the desired result, since the active substance simply will not have time to act before the next urge to vomit. Therefore, tablets are given to pets only before trips to prevent motion sickness, and in all other cases it is better to give injections.

Injection to a cat

And for the best therapeutic effect, it is not recommended to do the following::

  • feed your pet an hour before taking the drug;
  • mix tablets with fatty foods (for example, cheese, meat, etc.);
  • Give the next tablet or give an injection until a day has passed since taking the previous ones.

Injection solution

The injection solution is administered to cats under the skin at the rate of 1 ml of the drug per 10 kg of live weight. In order not to make a mistake when taking the required amount of solution, it is better to use an insulin syringe. It also has a thin needle, which will make the process of administering the drug easier. You can prick a cat yourself, but you will need to secure it during the procedure so that it does not twitch.

Only one injection per day is allowed, the course of treatment is a maximum of 5 days, but usually one or two injections are enough for the vomiting to stop and the animal to feel better. But if a cat vomits very strongly and often, then she will most likely need the maximum course of treatment.

Pills

The drug in tablet form, as mentioned above, is used only to prevent motion sickness, and not to treat the animal.

Only before the trip takes place, the active substance must have time to act, so the cat should be given the tablet a few hours before it. If your pet refuses to take the medicine, it can be hidden in the food.

Cat in a carrier in the car

Usually, a single dose is enough for the cat to tolerate the trip well, and repeated doses after a day may be required only in extreme cases. The dose of the medicine is calculated as follows: per 1 kg of cat’s body weight, 8 mg of the active substance is required. This means that one 100 mg tablet can be given to a cat whose weight is 2 or 2.5 kg.

Owner reviews

I think it is the most effective anti-vomiting remedy for cats. Just hard to find and expensive.

The cat's vomiting does not go away. Again between 3am and 9am. Never during the day. We are saved by Serenia. But I’m afraid that the kisuli’s body will get used to it soon. And again, this is probably harmful to internal organs. The doctor prescribed Sirenia, citing the fact that the drug is very mild and can be used for a long time. Well, actually it’s been 2 months in Serenia. At least some block. Otherwise, you will constantly vomit.

The cat suffered an attack of acute cystitis. Frequent, painful trips to the toilet in small portions mixed with blood. Constant licking of the genitals. The cat vomited the food she ate once. The cat has an appetite. We visited the doctor, the doctor said that it looked like idiopathic cystitis. A one-time injection of 0.5 ml of serenium was given subcutaneously.

Injected into cats, it helps immediately. You just need to calculate the dose by weight and it is better to inject with insulin syringes, since the dosage is small even for an adult cat. And when injecting, hold it tightly, the drug stings.

Used it twice for vomiting kittens. Effective. But, considering that rarely does anyone buy a bottle (and where should it be), and they buy it in syringes, several ml each, you need to know exactly when the bottle is opened! Otherwise, after spending money, you will inject spoiled medicine. And also, calculate the dose accurately, take it with an insulin syringe, and after 15 minutes, feed it!

Excellent for relieving nausea - graying, a subcutaneous injection once a day (but it’s terribly painful). I don’t know how it compares to latran, but compared to cerucal it is much more effective. Our regimen (which the doctors gave to my cat): -zantac -antibiotic -noshpa -serenia or cerucal

I injected two different cats at different times. It was prescribed by an excellent doctor. In our case, re-application was not required.

Veterinarian's opinion

Veterinarian's opinion

Vitaly Borisovich

I work in a veterinary clinic and my colleagues and I often discuss various drugs for treating animals. Not long ago they talked about Serenia, which is given to pets to eliminate vomiting. This is an effective drug that can stop vomiting of any origin, even that caused by disorders of the vestibular system. Serenia begins to act quickly, and none of us have encountered any side effects from taking it. In most cases, people bring cats to us with viral infections and gastrointestinal problems. And we prescribe taking this medicine in combination with other drugs for one or a couple of days, and in especially serious cases, when vomiting becomes protracted, we extend the course to five days. Some cat owners like to prescribe treatment for their pets on their own, without rushing to consult with us, and this only causes harm. After all, there are diseases in which the administration of an antiemetic is a mandatory condition of treatment to prevent dehydration, and ordinary people (not veterinarians) may not know about this. And for those cats that do not tolerate transportation well, Sereniya tablets are excellent.

Storage

Important! This medicine should be kept in a place where small children cannot enter.

The drug should be kept in a room where the temperature will range from 15 to 30 degrees. In addition, the selected location should not be exposed to droplets of water or sunlight.

If the above recommendations are strictly followed, the medicine can be used for three years. Expired product must be thrown away because... its further use may be hazardous to health.

Indications for prescribing the drug

Dog during a trip

According to the instructions, the veterinary drug "Serenia" is intended to stop vomiting in animals caused by the following reasons:

  • injuries;
  • food and toxic poisoning;
  • vomiting due to the effects of anesthesia;
  • nausea and vomiting as a consequence of cancer;
  • motion sickness when moving cats and dogs in transport;
  • for cystitis, subject to a thorough examination.

When to use

According to the instructions for use, Sereniya is prescribed to cats for vomiting of any origin. The medication is successfully used in the following cases:

  • in case of chemical poisoning;
  • for food poisoning;
  • when motion sickness occurs during transportation;
  • after anesthesia;
  • during chemotherapy;
  • for oncology;
  • with pathologies of the food system accompanied by vomiting.

Note! The drug can also be used for cystitis, but only as prescribed by a doctor.

Antiemetic injections are ideal for cases where your pet vomits when something gets into their stomach. The use of tablets in this case is ineffective due to the fact that the active substance does not have time to act before the urge to vomit occurs. In this regard, they are given to cats only to prevent motion sickness, that is, before a trip. In other cases, preference should be given

Reviews about the drug from breeders

Valentina: “I often take my cat to exhibitions and take it with me on trips. Previously, such trips turned into real torture for me and the animal. Unfortunately, there are very few effective means by which this problem can be solved. The veterinarian advised me to try Serenia, and I was pleased with the result. Now we only enjoy traveling in a car and on an airplane, the cat feels great, thanks to this drug we have long forgotten about motion sickness.”

Lilia: “I use Serenia in combination with medications that normalize digestive processes. One of my cats suffers from gastrointestinal problems and often reacts to food with nausea and vomiting. This drug helps reduce negative manifestations, and the animal feels much better.”

Svetlana: “My cat is not too sensitive to short trips, but long trips are often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The drug Sereniya really helps solve this problem, and I noticed that its use can be particularly effective by combining the medication with sorbent substances. The main thing is to maintain an interval of one and a half to two hours between the use of Serenia and the sorbent.”

Analogs of a veterinary drug

The veterinary drug has no direct analogues. However, in veterinary pharmacology there are a number of antiemetics with a different principle of action. The most commonly prescribed of them are:

Cerucal in cats is used for profuse vomiting that does not stop spontaneously

Metoclopramide weakens the sensitivity of the visceral nerves that transmit impulses from the stomach to the vomiting center
