No wool
Sphynxes are amazing: some representatives of this breed do not have a hair on them. But still, this feature does not occur very often; many subspecies of sphinxes still have a certain amount of thin and sparse hair.
Prominent representatives of sphinxes:

- Peterbalds. Originally from St. Petersburg. Gradually, the breed became one of the most popular among lovers of hairless cats.
- Elves. A completely new look. They got their name from the original shape of their ears.
In contrast to hairless cats are furry felines. Some of the most interesting are exotics.
Features of bald pets
The first mention of hairless cats goes back to the Mayan Indians. There these animals were considered sacred and revered as deities. Until the middle of the last century, very few people knew about the existence of hairless breeds.
Lack of hair is the result of genetic mutations and is quite rare. In 1966, a completely naked kitten was found in the offspring of an ordinary domestic cat, nicknamed Prune. This event, which occurred in the Canadian city of Ontario, marked the beginning of the development of all modern hairless breeds:
- Canadian Sphynx.
- Peterbald.
- Ukrainian Levkoy.
- Don Sphynx.
Hairless cats are famous for their friendly nature and high intellectual abilities, and in their devotion they can be compared with dogs. They are great friends. Getting along well with all family members, they tend to choose one favorite.
Sphinxes are distinguished by their plasticity and grace. Pets are able to subtly sense the emotional state of people and know how to find the right approach to them.
It is worth remembering that due to the lack of hair, the animal becomes very vulnerable and requires extreme attention and care:
- keeping warm and constant temperature control of the environment;
- protecting the skin from hot objects and direct sunlight;
- necessary clothing;
- regular skin cleansing.
Snub-nosed and fluffy
The original appearance of exotic cats has received popular recognition, although they were bred by accident by crossing different cats in an attempt to improve the Persian's coat. The resulting breed was rejected, but unexpectedly it gained widespread popularity.
The face attracts lovers, because of which exotics are rightfully considered one of the most unusual cat breeds. The cat's snub nose, wide-set round eyes and flattened muzzle leave no one indifferent.
The exotic coat is more similar to the British coat - it is shorter than that of the Persians and has a thick and soft undercoat.
American Wirehair
Outwardly, they are very similar to the American Shorthair cat, popular in the United States: a fine, strong, muscular body of medium size, short hair, calm and friendly character. A feature of wire-haired cats that is not found in representatives of other breeds is the structure of the hair. All of them are crimped and broken, which is why the fur is tangled and, as it were, disheveled. Representatives of the breed require regular grooming: washing and combing.
The mutation on the basis of which it was decided to develop this breed was registered in the USA in the 60s of the last century. The gene that affects changes in hair structure is called wire, due to the external resemblance of the hairs to wire. And yet, the name of the breed does not entirely correspond to reality: the fur feels the same as that of ordinary cats.
The biggest
Maine Coons are unusual cats due to their outstanding body size. They have been loved all over the world for several centuries, ever since they were developed in North America. The usual weight for these strong guys is 10 kilograms. But it won’t be surprising if the pet grows larger. Some representatives reach 15-16 kilograms. The Maine Coon has a recorded body length of 120 centimeters.
This makes these cats one of the most unusual in the world. Moreover, their character has an original trait - a love of water. For her sake, they are ready to overcome difficulties and get wet at every opportunity.
Interesting! This love of water, according to one version, appeared thanks to their ancestors, whom sailors willingly took with them on voyages.
Cornish Rex
The cats resemble sphinxes, but unlike them, the body of representatives of this breed, which continues the “scary cats” rating, is covered with undercoat. Agree that a little fur is better than a naked body. Even if this “astrakhan” fur looks like it was cut to pieces with dull children’s scissors. Dachshund cat
More recently, a new breed has appeared - the munchkin. These short-legged cats officially appeared in 1991, after they were identified as a separate breed. Interestingly, no one specifically tried to get an animal with such an appearance. But a rare mutation created an original appearance, and breeders did not miss the opportunity to get a new look.
Short legs, which in this breed of cats are 2 times smaller than standard ones, make it difficult for a munchkin to jump on a sofa or quickly climb a tree, which makes them very unusual representatives of the graceful feline family. But they do not experience other inconveniences, and their musculoskeletal system functions perfectly.
Savannah
This is an unusually graceful spotted cat with long slender legs, a neat head on a graceful neck and huge, vertically set ears. Savannahs have short, harsh-to-the-touch fur with a fairly thick undercoat. Despite the “wild heritage”, savannahs are quite friendly, playful and easy to train.
The idea of creating this breed was born completely by accident. In the 80s of the last century, African servals were very popular in the United States - elegant small animals with a spectacular leopard color. You could buy a serval in one of the many nurseries.
In one such nursery, the owner’s cat took a liking to a male serval. The fruit of this love was a pretty female kitten, who was named Savannah. Of course, such an amazing event could not go unnoticed. After some time, enthusiasts developed a program for breeding a new breed, named after its first representative. Today the breed is actively developing, but is already recognized by the American felinological system TICA.
No tail
Some representatives of the cat family have another anomaly - the absence of a tail. Some have preserved some of their vertebrae, while others are completely missing. This is another natural mutation, and not an attempt to create a breed artificially. These cats are called Manx.

Interesting! According to legend, a tailless cat sailed on a ship that crashed near the island. The fluffy sailor made it to land and gradually began to meet kittens on the island that had no tails.
Another breed does not have the usual tail, but several vertebrae are preserved, thanks to which it still has a short tail. These are bobtails. If a standard tail has about 23 vertebrae, then in the case of a bobtail there are no more than 7.
This unusual breed also has other talents - they can not only meow or purr, but also emit something similar to barking and chirping. Kurilian bobtails are cats that are unable to retract their claws, which makes them similar to cheetahs.

A cat with an unusual exterior is included in the list of scary breeds due to its unkempt fur. The main distinguishing feature of the Laperm is its curly coat. The fur of this fur coat resembles an unsuccessful perm done by an inexperienced artist.
On the cat's body there is straight, glossy fur, long elastic curls in the shape of a spiral, short curls and matted hair. The tail is huge, fluffy in shape, reminiscent of a squirrel.

The history of cats with tufted ears
Almost every long-haired cat has ear tufts . As they grow older, the tassels disappear. There are several officially recognized breeds for which tassels are standard.
Scientists still cannot determine what these funny tassels on the ears are for - just for decoration or have any functional significance.
However, three theories are known :
- Brushes work as sound amplifiers and help cats amplify weak sounds and convey the source of noise with high accuracy. Thanks to this “accessory,” the animals became professional hunters, able to hear the faint rustling of small animals under the snow. However, the theory was smashed to smithereens several times, since the hairs are absolutely not connected with the senses.
- A tuft of hair on the ears serves as a kind of beacon , thanks to which cats recognize each other at a great distance. For example, the lynx has excellent eyesight, and its tassels help it spot its relatives from afar, even in the dark.
- The brushes determine the age of the cat - the longer and darker the hairs, the older the animal. But even in an adult lynx, the tassels can have a light shade, so the theory, in fact, has no connection with reality.
Many breeders are interested in the question: when did the first cat with tassels on its ears appear? All recognized modern breeds have their own history of origin, but officially the oldest tasseled breed is considered to be the Norwegian Forest Cat . Scientists admit that it was she who became the ancestor of Maine Coons.
However, illustrations from the era of ancient Scandinavian culture indicate that Norse cats accompanied the Vikings until the 16th century. In some legends, the god Thor traveled with a "fluffy forest beauty", whose description resembles a modern Norwegian cat. The animals are friendly, playful, intelligent, with the sweetest character, and excellent hunters. Similar to the most common domestic cats, the fur can come in different lengths, colors and patterns. Able to easily adapt to changing living conditions.
Manx tailless
These cats appeared due to a random gene mutation. The Isle of Man is considered their homeland. A feature of the breed is a residual tail measuring no more than 3 cm in length or its absence. The shape of the cat resembles a ball. It has large eyes, medium-sized ears with a pointed end, and a short neck. The front legs are shorter than the hind legs, the coat is two-layered, with short undercoat.
Cats easily get used to new living conditions and can easily tolerate moving. Parting with the owners can cause deep trauma to the moral health of the animal. They love to jump and gallop, frequent walks and games. Children are treated with caution: they will not allow themselves to be pulled by their ears or short tail. They are very brave and will rush into battle if their owner is threatened.

The Cymric differs from the Manx tailless breed only in the complete absence of a tail and long hair of any color. The head has well-developed cheekbones and cheeks, the eyes are large and round with the outer corner raised upward. Eye color always matches coat color. The ears are medium in size, tapering at the tips. The hind legs are longer than the front legs.
Thick fur requires special care - it needs to be combed twice a week, during the shedding period it can be done every day. The area in the tail area is painful and should not be spanked or punished.
Kymriks are good jumpers and hunters, they are not afraid of water and swim. The diet must be high-calorie and balanced, meat-based. They have a calm, balanced disposition and are attached to their owners.
