5 most unusual cat breeds and interesting facts about them

Each person in his own way represents the most beautiful and unusual breed of cats. Some people cannot imagine a pet without a soft and fluffy fur coat, while others will choose a hairless friend. Some felines naturally have original features: curly hair, lack of a tail, long torso or large size. What cat can be called the most unusual in the world?

No wool

Sphynxes are amazing: some representatives of this breed do not have a hair on them. But still, this feature does not occur very often; many subspecies of sphinxes still have a certain amount of thin and sparse hair.

Prominent representatives of sphinxes:

  1. Canadian. A little fluff on their body is acceptable, but it is practically invisible.
  2. Donskie. There is no hair on their body at all. Such cats are often chosen by people with allergies.
  3. Ukrainian Levkoy. They are distinguished not only by the absence of a fur coat, but also by their drooping ears. The breed is young. In 2007, she was officially registered by breeders from St. Petersburg.
  4. Peterbalds. Originally from St. Petersburg. Gradually, the breed became one of the most popular among lovers of hairless cats.
  5. Elves. A completely new look. They got their name from the original shape of their ears.

In contrast to hairless cats are furry felines. Some of the most interesting are exotics.

Features of bald pets

The first mention of hairless cats goes back to the Mayan Indians. There these animals were considered sacred and revered as deities. Until the middle of the last century, very few people knew about the existence of hairless breeds.

Lack of hair is the result of genetic mutations and is quite rare. In 1966, a completely naked kitten was found in the offspring of an ordinary domestic cat, nicknamed Prune. This event, which occurred in the Canadian city of Ontario, marked the beginning of the development of all modern hairless breeds:

  1. Canadian Sphynx.
  2. Peterbald.
  3. Ukrainian Levkoy.
  4. Don Sphynx.

Hairless cats are famous for their friendly nature and high intellectual abilities, and in their devotion they can be compared with dogs. They are great friends. Getting along well with all family members, they tend to choose one favorite.

Sphinxes are distinguished by their plasticity and grace. Pets are able to subtly sense the emotional state of people and know how to find the right approach to them.

It is worth remembering that due to the lack of hair, the animal becomes very vulnerable and requires extreme attention and care:

  • keeping warm and constant temperature control of the environment;
  • protecting the skin from hot objects and direct sunlight;
  • necessary clothing;
  • regular skin cleansing.

Snub-nosed and fluffy

The original appearance of exotic cats has received popular recognition, although they were bred by accident by crossing different cats in an attempt to improve the Persian's coat. The resulting breed was rejected, but unexpectedly it gained widespread popularity.

The face attracts lovers, because of which exotics are rightfully considered one of the most unusual cat breeds. The cat's snub nose, wide-set round eyes and flattened muzzle leave no one indifferent.

The exotic coat is more similar to the British coat - it is shorter than that of the Persians and has a thick and soft undercoat.

American Wirehair

Outwardly, they are very similar to the American Shorthair cat, popular in the United States: a fine, strong, muscular body of medium size, short hair, calm and friendly character. A feature of wire-haired cats that is not found in representatives of other breeds is the structure of the hair. All of them are crimped and broken, which is why the fur is tangled and, as it were, disheveled. Representatives of the breed require regular grooming: washing and combing.

The mutation on the basis of which it was decided to develop this breed was registered in the USA in the 60s of the last century. The gene that affects changes in hair structure is called wire, due to the external resemblance of the hairs to wire. And yet, the name of the breed does not entirely correspond to reality: the fur feels the same as that of ordinary cats.

The biggest

Maine Coons are unusual cats due to their outstanding body size. They have been loved all over the world for several centuries, ever since they were developed in North America. The usual weight for these strong guys is 10 kilograms. But it won’t be surprising if the pet grows larger. Some representatives reach 15-16 kilograms. The Maine Coon has a recorded body length of 120 centimeters.

This makes these cats one of the most unusual in the world. Moreover, their character has an original trait - a love of water. For her sake, they are ready to overcome difficulties and get wet at every opportunity.

Interesting! This love of water, according to one version, appeared thanks to their ancestors, whom sailors willingly took with them on voyages.

Cornish Rex

The cats resemble sphinxes, but unlike them, the body of representatives of this breed, which continues the “scary cats” rating, is covered with undercoat. Agree that a little fur is better than a naked body. Even if this “astrakhan” fur looks like it was cut to pieces with dull children’s scissors. The picture is completed by long thin legs, huge ears and the complex character of a tomboy.

Cornish Rexes are considered obsessive pets. Not only do cats prevent their owners from taking a step, but they also accompany every step with a loud “Meow!” Animals are very talkative; they have their own sound for every action. Smart pets are better than other cat breeds in learning to walk on a harness, follow commands, and surprise with tricks.

The glands in cats' toes cause their paws to smell like "blue cheese."

Dachshund cat

More recently, a new breed has appeared - the munchkin. These short-legged cats officially appeared in 1991, after they were identified as a separate breed. Interestingly, no one specifically tried to get an animal with such an appearance. But a rare mutation created an original appearance, and breeders did not miss the opportunity to get a new look.

Short legs, which in this breed of cats are 2 times smaller than standard ones, make it difficult for a munchkin to jump on a sofa or quickly climb a tree, which makes them very unusual representatives of the graceful feline family. But they do not experience other inconveniences, and their musculoskeletal system functions perfectly.

Savannah

This is an unusually graceful spotted cat with long slender legs, a neat head on a graceful neck and huge, vertically set ears. Savannahs have short, harsh-to-the-touch fur with a fairly thick undercoat. Despite the “wild heritage”, savannahs are quite friendly, playful and easy to train.

The idea of creating this breed was born completely by accident. In the 80s of the last century, African servals were very popular in the United States - elegant small animals with a spectacular leopard color. You could buy a serval in one of the many nurseries.

In one such nursery, the owner’s cat took a liking to a male serval. The fruit of this love was a pretty female kitten, who was named Savannah. Of course, such an amazing event could not go unnoticed. After some time, enthusiasts developed a program for breeding a new breed, named after its first representative. Today the breed is actively developing, but is already recognized by the American felinological system TICA.

No tail

Some representatives of the cat family have another anomaly - the absence of a tail. Some have preserved some of their vertebrae, while others are completely missing. This is another natural mutation, and not an attempt to create a breed artificially. These cats are called Manx.

Manx

Interesting! According to legend, a tailless cat sailed on a ship that crashed near the island. The fluffy sailor made it to land and gradually began to meet kittens on the island that had no tails.

Another breed does not have the usual tail, but several vertebrae are preserved, thanks to which it still has a short tail. These are bobtails. If a standard tail has about 23 vertebrae, then in the case of a bobtail there are no more than 7.

This unusual breed also has other talents - they can not only meow or purr, but also emit something similar to barking and chirping. Kurilian bobtails are cats that are unable to retract their claws, which makes them similar to cheetahs.

Laperm

A cat with an unusual exterior is included in the list of scary breeds due to its unkempt fur. The main distinguishing feature of the Laperm is its curly coat. The fur of this fur coat resembles an unsuccessful perm done by an inexperienced artist.

On the cat's body there is straight, glossy fur, long elastic curls in the shape of a spiral, short curls and matted hair. The tail is huge, fluffy in shape, reminiscent of a squirrel.

Among cat lovers, lapermas have gained popularity because of their sociability and gentle nature. Cats are inquisitive, affectionate and loving. They love to sit on the laps and hands of their owner and love to purr.

Price

In Russian nurseries - 35,000 - 50,000 rubles; There are no nurseries of this breed in Ukraine.

The breed is for those connoisseurs who will not spare a lot of money for a faded fur coat with scuffs from a fashionable designer boutique.

leopard cat

Bright spotted color is a distinctive feature of Bengal cats. They have short golden fur, which gives them a resemblance to their wild relatives.

The first representative appeared in the mid-20th century, when a wild Bengal cat, bought on the black market, gave birth to offspring from a domestic cat. This is how the animal turned out with a gentle disposition and a predatory coloration. This is a happy occasion, because such crossing almost never ends in success.

Peterbald breed

The Peterbald was first obtained in 1994 in St. Petersburg as a result of crossing Oriental cats with the Don Sphynx. The animal is distinguished by its slimness and sophistication, as well as its lively, playful character.

In general, the breed is very similar to the Bald Don. This is an elegant and strong beast with hot skin. The cat has an elongated, strong body with developed muscles and a strong skeleton. The paws are long and thin. The forearms are straight, and the oval hands have long, flexible fingers. The tail is straight, sharp and quite long. Pronounced sexual dimorphism is observed.

Scottish lop-eared

The Scottish Fold cat or Scottish Fold gets its name from the shape of its ears. They are small and slightly crooked; against the background of large round eyes, you get the feeling that they are not there at all. Moreover, kittens are born with normal ears; they begin to develop after 21 days. This breed has short, silky fur that can be of any color. These are hardy cats, can adapt to any habitat, are friendly and affectionate, unforgiving, and love to purr on their owner’s lap.

A dose of joy from funny cats

The natural passage of time turns small, adorable kittens into big, lazy cats. However, a bit of childish spontaneity and sweetness remains in them, otherwise there would not be these photographs that will definitely make you laugh heartily. Funny cats remain naive kittens even when they are ten-kilogram felt boots. Just look at these cunning monsters who decided that pretending to be a kitten is the best way to avoid getting scolded for stealing a piece of sausage.

Everyone who has a cat has at least once witnessed his attempts to squeeze himself into a tiny box. Surprisingly, they succeed. Science does not yet know what forces cause all narrow, small and cramped objects to expand in front of cats, and the results of research have been carefully documented. It is unlikely that this photo report, where funny cats peek out from the most incredible cracks, will leave you indifferent.

This is interesting! Cats are omnipotent. This is an indisputable fact, because then how do they manage to force people to bring them food, scratch their bellies and carry a candy wrapper on a string?

The only thing cats cannot control is their tongue. Oh, this insidious pink fidget won’t get back into his mouth. He's just waiting for the cat to fall asleep so he can break out. While they are fighting their battle, we can enjoy these photos of funny cats who forgot about their tongue.

What a difficult job it is to be a cat. Walk gracefully, wag your tail, lick your paws. How sometimes you want to fall apart casually and stop being chic. Apparently, not all pets want to work, which is why these photos appeared where funny cats and cats forget about their duty to be stunning and sit like people. Special attention should be paid to sleeping cats. Enjoy!

It is worth mentioning a special genre of this art called “My Master is a Dreamer.” People come up with all sorts of things to photograph their pets. And they will put on glasses, and pull on tights, and catch you right after the bath, when the fur is sticking out. No shame, no conscience! While funny cats protest, we can appreciate this unique genre.

Japanese Bobtail

The Japanese Bobtail is one of the strangest cat breeds in Japan and Southeast Asia. They are born with a rabbit's tail and some of them even hop like rabbits instead of running. Japanese Bobtails have been well known and popular in Japan for centuries, and they are mentioned in folklore and art. Japanese Bobtails are medium-sized and lean, yet muscular. According to the name of the breed, their most distinctive feature is their short tail, about 10 centimeters in length, sometimes curled into a corkscrew, which makes them look even shorter.

Funny kittens you haven't seen before

But there is something magical about them that gives kittens such a lovely look. It’s not for nothing that most popular photos depict funny kittens. We invite you to appreciate this beauty too.

Enough? If your mouth is filled with an ear-to-ear smile and your eyes sparkle, then you are a positive person. If these images are not enough for you to make your heart beat faster with joy and your cheeks blush, we have a portion of even greater graces. These kittens will not leave anyone indifferent, because they are so clumsy and curious in a good way. It is unlikely that you will resist the touching eyes with which this funny kitten looks at you. He wants you to smile!

Finally, for the real flints, we saved the most, most, most fun photos. Real masterpieces of the feline art movement. Drumroll! The funniest kittens will definitely make you laugh (otherwise we won’t even know what to do with you).

The history of cats with tufted ears

Almost every long-haired cat has ear tufts . As they grow older, the tassels disappear. There are several officially recognized breeds for which tassels are standard.

Scientists still cannot determine what these funny tassels on the ears are for - just for decoration or have any functional significance.

However, three theories are known :

  1. Brushes work as sound amplifiers and help cats amplify weak sounds and convey the source of noise with high accuracy. Thanks to this “accessory,” the animals became professional hunters, able to hear the faint rustling of small animals under the snow. However, the theory was smashed to smithereens several times, since the hairs are absolutely not connected with the senses.
  2. A tuft of hair on the ears serves as a kind of beacon , thanks to which cats recognize each other at a great distance. For example, the lynx has excellent eyesight, and its tassels help it spot its relatives from afar, even in the dark.
  3. The brushes determine the age of the cat - the longer and darker the hairs, the older the animal. But even in an adult lynx, the tassels can have a light shade, so the theory, in fact, has no connection with reality.

Many breeders are interested in the question: when did the first cat with tassels on its ears appear? All recognized modern breeds have their own history of origin, but officially the oldest tasseled breed is considered to be the Norwegian Forest Cat . Scientists admit that it was she who became the ancestor of Maine Coons.

However, illustrations from the era of ancient Scandinavian culture indicate that Norse cats accompanied the Vikings until the 16th century. In some legends, the god Thor traveled with a "fluffy forest beauty", whose description resembles a modern Norwegian cat. If you believe the Scandinavian sagas, the first representative of cats with tassels was the beautiful Norwegian.

Sphinx

The Sphynx or Canadian Hairless is perhaps one of the most famous cat breeds with a strange appearance. These cats are born without hair. Depending on your point of view, the breed is exotic or a little scary looking. They tend to have folds in the skin that are difficult to notice. Because of their thickness, their skin is often compared to warm suede. Sideburns and eyebrows may or may not be present. Another strange feature of them is wrinkles. Around the shoulders, between the ears, around the face - these are the places where wrinkles tend to be the most. They tend to be energetic, they are intelligent, curious and very affectionate to their owners.

Munchkin

This is the first representative of miniature cats. Owners of this breed have short legs, medium size and long body, triangular ears. The cat-dachshund breed is also called. The animals are friendly, playful, intelligent, with the sweetest character, and excellent hunters. Similar to the most common domestic cats, the fur can come in different lengths, colors and patterns. Able to easily adapt to changing living conditions.

Manx tailless

These cats appeared due to a random gene mutation. The Isle of Man is considered their homeland. A feature of the breed is a residual tail measuring no more than 3 cm in length or its absence. The shape of the cat resembles a ball. It has large eyes, medium-sized ears with a pointed end, and a short neck. The front legs are shorter than the hind legs, the coat is two-layered, with short undercoat.

Cats easily get used to new living conditions and can easily tolerate moving. Parting with the owners can cause deep trauma to the moral health of the animal. They love to jump and gallop, frequent walks and games. Children are treated with caution: they will not allow themselves to be pulled by their ears or short tail. They are very brave and will rush into battle if their owner is threatened.

They are in good health and like to drink cold water.

Cymric

The Cymric differs from the Manx tailless breed only in the complete absence of a tail and long hair of any color. The head has well-developed cheekbones and cheeks, the eyes are large and round with the outer corner raised upward. Eye color always matches coat color. The ears are medium in size, tapering at the tips. The hind legs are longer than the front legs.

Thick fur requires special care - it needs to be combed twice a week, during the shedding period it can be done every day. The area in the tail area is painful and should not be spanked or punished.

Kymriks are good jumpers and hunters, they are not afraid of water and swim. The diet must be high-calorie and balanced, meat-based. They have a calm, balanced disposition and are attached to their owners.
