The largest cat breeds rating cats with big ears

The choice of cats with large ears is very large: among them there are both loyal natures and animals with a wild disposition. The size of the ears does not in any way affect the acuity of hearing, and the only parameter that distinguishes them from other felines is their improved ability to cool themselves. The thin skin of the ears has hundreds of blood vessels that cool at the slightest change in air temperature. In hot weather, blood circulates faster in the body and more of it passes through the ear capillaries. It is not for nothing that many cats that originate from countries with hot climates have impressively sized ears. But this list also includes those animals for which breeders actively worked on the size and shape of their ears.

Abyssinian cat

Siamese

Due to the wide-set ears and pointed ends, the elongated muzzle of the Siamese cat appears triangular. In addition to the non-standard size of the ears, these animals have a fit, graceful body, toned limbs and neck, and almond-shaped eyes. They have a special coloring, which makes it impossible to confuse the Siamese with another breed - dark spots on the paws, tail and head are a must. Siamese cats have a loud voice, are very affectionate towards people and require a lot of attention from them.

The price of Siamese kittens starts from 3,000 rubles.

Siamese cat

Abyssinians

Small cats are distinguished by a strong muscular body and large cone-shaped ears. The ears are directed slightly forward, so it seems that the animal is constantly alert. This breed has an attractive coat, the color of which is called “safari”: the hairs have a double or triple color, which creates the impression that the coat shimmers in the light. They have a complex disposition, a curious and playful character.

You can buy an Abyssinian kitten for 10,000-40,000 rubles.

Abyssinian cat

Carthusian cat (or chartreuse)

Average weight: males 6-7 kg, females 4-5 kg

These short-haired Frenchies are the most jealous cats in the world - they cannot stand rival pets in any way. If there is Chartreuse in the family, then there is ONLY Chartreuse in the family! They have the same attitude towards their favorite place in the house - try to take it! By nature, Chartreuse is endowed with a very weak voice (although they purr from the heart - you can hear it in the next room). But in contrast to their vocal abilities, these cats, as you already understand, are gifted with a steely character that will have to be reckoned with.

Orientals

Graceful animals with thin limbs, a long tail, sparkling eyes and soft fur without undercoat. The ears of Oriental cats deserve special attention - the breed standard states that they should be triangular, pointed and continue with the line of the cheekbones. These animals are distinguished by their loyal character, so many compare their disposition to that of a dog.

The price of a kitten with documents ranges from 20,000-40,000 rubles, while on the bird market you can find an oriental from 3,500 rubles.

Devon rex

Huge ears are the first thing that catches your eye when you see a Devon Rex. They have a wide base and a rounded tip, are set low and look almost to the sides. Devon Rexes have soft, curly fur, a flattened face with high cheekbones and round, large eyes. They are loyal and playful pets with wonderful dog-like personalities, which is why they, like dogs, wag their tails when they are happy about something.

Average prices for Devon Rex kittens are 15,000-30,000 rubles, depending on class and blood lines, but adult animals are cheaper.

Redgall

The largest cat breeds rating cats with big ears

The Redgall is a relatively new cat breed with large eyes. But its main distinguishing feature is not an expressive look, but reduced muscle tone. This fact is confirmed by the name of the breed, which is translated from English as “rag doll”. The Redgall is the result of crossing a Siamese and a Burmese cat.

Large domestic cats, Redgalls give birth to pure white kittens, whose fur is covered with dark markings before the age of two. Depending on how the spots on the body of adults are distributed, the breed is divided into two varieties: colorpoint (color, like the Siamese) and two-color (with white areas on the muzzle and tail). In each of them, colors such as blue, lilac and chocolate are acceptable.

Redgolls are characterized by calmness and equanimity. This representative of big cats is ready to make friends with any other pets. A hamster can easily run across it, a parrot can sit on its tail, a large dog can step on its stomach, etc. What kind of cat would not react in this case? And the redgall won’t even blink an eye, because for him everything living is a friend.

Maine Coon

Unlike other breeds, the pointed ears of Maine Coons, which are located on the very top of the head, are decorated with “tassels”. They are giants in the pet world with long, thick hair that can weigh up to 15 kg. Despite their size, they are distinguished by a calm, friendly character and never release their claws without a serious reason. Maine Coons have a favorable attitude towards water, and they also love to dip their paws in a bowl of water before drinking.

The average price of Maine Coon kittens is 15,000-50,000 rubles.

Maine Coon kitten

Somali (Abyssinian Longhair)

Beautiful animals with a muscular, flexible body, long, brightly colored hair and a fluffy tail. The large, alert ears have a wide base and moderately pointed tips, and the inner surface of the auricle is covered with tufts of hair. They are active, playful and sociable, get along well with other pets and love long walks in the fresh air.

The price of kittens starts from 6,000 rubles.

Somali (Abyssinian Longhair)

Chausie

The largest breeds of domestic cats include the recently bred Chausie, which, due to their small numbers, are mainly pets of breeders.

The large Chausie breed is easily recognizable by its spectacular appearance. They have a dense silky coat of silver, brownish or black color; a round muzzle with swollen cheeks and nose pads; ears with small tassels; strong muscular body. Thanks to the presence of all these characteristics, chausies have the appearance of real predators.

Even though Chausies are quite large, they are more energetic than many other cat breeds. At the same time, these pets crave communication with their owners and cannot live without their affection.

Average weight: male 4-7 kg, female 3-5 kg

This cat breed, with many variations in its name, was created by crossing a jungle cat and a domestic cat. Houseies love to jump, climb trees and hunt everyone and everything. This type of cat is so rare that the world has yet to study them. What is known is that they are friendly, treat other pets well, and love to travel!

Turkish Angora

These cats differ from other representatives of the “eared cats” by their non-Oriental origin. Another distinctive feature of the breed is almond-shaped blue, sometimes multi-colored, eyes, and a predominantly snow-white, silky coat. Angoras have a neat muzzle and high-set ears, which are decorated with tufts of thick hair. These are smart, affectionate pets who are very attached to their owner, so they will be ideal companions for lonely people.

The breed is not exotic and rare, so average prices for Turkish Angora kittens start at 2,000 rubles.

Maine Coon is the largest cat in the world

If you objectively evaluate the proportions of a cat's body, the ears will seem disproportionately large.
Even the British, who have small, neat ears, have ears that are much larger than human standards. And the point here is not that it is primarily an instrument of hearing. Hearing is excellent in absolutely all breeds and species. This is due to the unique structure of the auricle. In addition, the ears are a kind of locators. Each pet's ear is equipped with thirty-two muscles, which provide high mobility and allow the animal to “prick up” its ears to any sound source.

Ears also serve as a kind of means of communication. An angry or frightened animal will press them to its head and hiss, indicating its readiness to attack or defend. A calm pet's ears are relaxed and extended.

But at the slightest noise they are the first to tense up, demonstrating the cat’s readiness to run towards the source of the sound or escape from danger.

The range of frequencies that felines pick up is striking in its breadth. A cat is able to catch the rustle of a mouse in a hole.

A cat's hearing is tuned primarily to high frequencies. So, a person picks up sounds in the range from sixteen to twenty kilohertz, and a cat from fifty to sixty-five.

Cats perfectly perceive and recognize the owner's voice. Scientists suggest that a pet recognizes more than a hundred words and knows at least ten commands. However, looking at some felines, one gets the impression that they understand absolutely everything. And, if they wanted and could talk, they would be the smartest interlocutors.

But the main reason for the disproportionately large (from a human point of view) ears is the thermoregulation of the animal’s body.

This feline tool is also unique. It includes a few thermoreceptors located on the animal’s body, the tongue, sweat glands on the paw pads and the ears.

The largest cat breeds rating cats with big ears

All cat thermoreceptors are ineffective; most of them are hidden under the fur. If a person enters a hot zone, he sweats profusely, thereby reducing body temperature. A cat's paw pads only sweat. In some breeds, the sweat glands on the paws work more intensely (Chausie, all representatives of wild species), in others this reflex is weakly expressed (Russian Blue, Nibelung).

By abundantly wetting the fur and skin with saliva, the animal also promotes thermoregulation. Rapid breathing with the tongue hanging out is another tool of the beast to combat overheating of the body.

Large ears visually act as a sensor - when the environment heats up, the animal’s body temperature rises, the cardiovascular system is activated, and blood movement accelerates.

The thin walls of the ears are all penetrated by a tiny network of blood vessels. As the air temperature rises, the animal's ears become red and hot; their large surface allows for faster heat exchange. In normal condition, a cat's ears are cool with pale skin (corresponding to color).

Indeed, the largest ears are those of cats living or originating from hot countries - most wild species, Siamese, Abyssinian, Somalia.

The record holder for the largest ear size among the cat species living in the wild is the African Serval.

This is a medium-sized cat, up to sixty-five centimeters high at the withers and up to one and a half meters long from the nose to the tip of the short tail. Bright, almost orange in color (the intensity of the main tone depends on the subspecies) with black spots, white belly, quills and false “eyes” on the back of the ears.

Recently, it has become fashionable and status-bearing to keep an exotic cat in the house. To do this, the kittens are taken away from the breeding female early and hand-fed. The domestic Serval is a unique and wonderful, very beautiful pet. But few can afford to own such a cat - the price of an animal starts from half a million rubles. Keeping and caring for a pet is also not cheap.

Another wild beauty is Caracal. This is a separate species of cat, common in Asia, Dagestan, and China. Sometimes it is called the steppe lynx, but this is morphologically incorrect; it is more close to pumas.

We suggest you familiarize yourself with: Cat breeds with big eyes

Slightly lower than the Serval, but more powerful and wider. The coat ranges from pale red to bright cherry color, and the eyes are often bright blue, surrounded by a black rim. The abdomen, quills and false “eyes” on the ears are white. The ears are very large with high black tufts. Just like the Serval, it is expensive to purchase and maintain.

Another large-eared feline predator is the much smaller sand or dune cat. This savage is even smaller than a pet. The body length is up to ninety centimeters, half of which is on the tail. The maximum weight of a male is three and a half kilograms.

The coat is thick, soft, sandy, sometimes gray. The head is large, flattened, with thick sideburns. The ears on such a small animal seem simply huge - they are located widely and extend onto the side of the skull. They are reminiscent of such “locators” and the piercing gaze of the green eyes of space aliens.

It lives in the Sahara, the Arabian Peninsula and Central Asia. This desert animal has an absolutely wild disposition and is absolutely not suitable for domestication.

An animal that very little is known about is the Chinese or Gobi desert cat. This species is endemic to China.

Thick reddish skin with sparse stripes and thick soft hair visually increases the size of this small animal.

The largest cat breeds rating cats with big ears

The maximum weight of males is about nine kilograms. The length with the tail is a little more than ninety centimeters, the height at the withers is thirty. The ears of this steppe inhabitant are very large with expressive tassels reminiscent of lynxes.

These amazing creatures have been exterminated for a long time and intensively, today their population is less than ten thousand heads. They are listed in the second appendix of CITES - the convention on international trade. They are protected today by the Republic of China. Not social animals, there was no case of domestication.

The amazing animal margay or long-tailed cat lives in the tropical forests of South America. A bright, beautiful, medium-sized (up to eight kilograms) representative of the leopard coloring, is extremely rare and is protected by the international community. The animal's ears are large, widely spaced, the tips almost do not narrow and are smoothly rounded.

Breeds bred by humans from wild cats are hybrid. Among them there are also many cats with big ears.

The Savannah breed originated from the long-eared Serval by crossing with the Abyssinian. This is the largest cat breed to date (in the first generation) and is still very rare, almost completely repeating the appearance of the serval (longer tail and slightly smaller ears). Very rare and expensive, both to acquire and to maintain.

The hybridization of the House with the Abyssinian gave rise to the wonderful Chausie breed, whose appearance is slightly reminiscent of the Caracal. The coat is solid, ticked, and comes in sorel (red), natural (gray) and black grizzly (black with gray hairs) colors. Quite difficult to reproduce, quite rare and expensive, but a very beautiful breed with large ears ending in a characteristic tassel.

The crossing of the Caracal with the Abyssinian cat was finally crowned with success and gave humanity the Caracat breed. Almost no different in appearance from their wild ancestor. Large, very beautiful and quite socialized animals. Work on the breed is still in full swing. Roads and rare.

The Maine Coon is a domestic cat that ranks first in the world size rankings. The name of the breed is translated from English as “Maine raccoon.”

The largest breed is distinguished by its magnificent appearance, which is ensured by the following characteristics: a strong skeleton, well-developed muscles, long luxurious hair (can be of different shades), a large bushy tail and expressive eyes in emerald-golden tones. Maine Coons are sociable and easy-going; they become very attached to their home and their owners.

The largest cat breed in the world is also the quietest. The fact is that Maine Coons practically cannot meow.

Sometimes, in order to hear the “singing” of these large cats, owners have to lightly pinch their ears. The Maine Coon, despite the fact that it is the largest of its relatives, remains active and playful until old age.

Canadian Sphynxes

Representatives of this breed have very large, widely set ears with rounded tips. Sphynxes have a round body, a wide chest, a thin long tail and widely set forelimbs. The unusual appearance is added by smooth skin with many folds on the neck, forehead and limbs. At the same time, they can be completely bald or have a thin, almost invisible fluff.

Prices for Sphynx kittens start from 5,000-8,000 rubles.

Canadian Sphynxes

Elf

These cats owe their impressively sized ears, which are shaped like a curved shell, to their Curl ancestors, who were crossed with the Canadian Sphynx. This is a young, rare breed. Its representatives are characterized by a rounded, slightly protruding belly, lack of fur, and in most cases, even mustaches and eyebrows. Warm leather is very soft and feels like cashmere. They are very affectionate and require special care because they are very afraid of drafts.

It is very difficult to purchase such a pet: for this you need to make a special order, and the price of a kitten will be in the range of 1-1.5 thousand dollars, an adult animal - at least 2.5-3.5 thousand dollars.

Savannah

An American breed with a characteristic leopard print color and quite impressive size. The height of an adult animal can reach 50-70 cm, and weight – 15 kg. Representatives have a powerful body, strong limbs and a relatively small head on which wide, large ears are located. They are easy to train and love to swim and walk on a leash. But sometimes they develop a wild character, especially after reaching 3 years of age.

This is one of the most expensive breeds in the world: prices start from 4-7.5 thousand dollars, and for first-generation pets the cost can reach 20 thousand dollars. Moreover, males have a lower cost than females, since they are infertile until the 4th generation.

Review of cat breeds with the largest ears

Among the cats with the most impressive ears, the most common are representatives of oriental breeds with African or Asian roots. However, breeders and felinologists have purposefully artificially bred cat breeds that are distinguished by large ears.

Breeders have created several large-eared cat breeds with a very exotic appearance.

Abyssinian cat

An elegant, graceful and extremely agile breed with ancient roots of African origin, otherwise called the Ethiopian or Algerian. Medium-sized cats with a muscular body and short fur of an unusual color (with ticking), as well as a small, neat, slightly elongated head with high-set large cone-shaped ears, the pointed tips of which often have tassels.

The Abyssinian cat is one of the most ancient breeds, and its image even adorned ancient Egyptian tombs.

Ticking is a coat color where each hair is painted with several stripes of different colors (usually dark and light).

It is the result of crossing domestic outbred cats with the Libyan wild steppe cat with the participation of Bengals, Orientals and Abyssinians. A freedom-loving and strong animal, colored like a leopard. The head is small with rather high-set, deep, voluminous and very mobile ears.

Havana

A UK-bred cat (breed registered in 1958) with a solid, shiny, dark brown short coat. The animal is not too large, sophisticated and elegant, with an elongated elliptical head and large wide ears, as well as extremely expressive intelligent eyes.

The Havana Brown cat breed is the result of crossing a Siamese cat and a domestic black cat.

Donchak dogs were bred in the early 90s in Moscow, and the Peterbald dogs derived from them were certified in 1996. Exotic animals with huge burdock-shaped rounded locator ears, which are located high and spaced wide apart, slightly tilted forward.

Siamese cat

An indigenous breed of cats originally from Siam (Thailand) with a specific color-point color. A slender, strong, medium-sized animal with a long wedge-shaped head, a straight long nose, almond-shaped slanting bright blue eyes and large, wide at the base, wide-set ears with pointed tips.

The Siamese cat is one of the oldest breeds known to scientists, although it appeared in Europe only in the second half of the 19th century.

Siamese cats have a lighter colored body than the protruding parts of the body - the points (muzzle, ears, paws and tail), which are more intensely colored. Therefore, this color is called “point”, that is, terminal. Color point belongs to the group of acromelanic colors.

Acromelanism is a phenomenon of incomplete albinism, when the intensity of coat coloring depends on temperature - less pigment is produced in warm parts of the body than in cold ones, that is, on the ears, muzzle, paws and tail, which will be colored darker.

Turkish Angora

An ancient naturally formed cat breed (Iran, Türkiye). An elegant, medium-sized cat with a dry, elongated body, high limbs and a long, pubescent, pointed tail. A narrow wedge-shaped head with large eyes set at a slight angle, large open vertical ears, densely pubescent inside.

The Angora cat (Turkish Angora) is known to many for its luxurious snow-white coat.

Somalia

A long-haired version of the Abyssinian breed, recognized in the 70s of the last century. An agile and graceful cat with thick, silky fur, also ticked. The ears are large, alert, widened at the base, cup-shaped, the internal pubescence is well developed, the presence of tassels is welcome.

The Somali cat (Somali) is a variety of the Abyssinian cat, but with one main difference: Somalis have longer and thicker hair compared to Abyssinians.

Wild cats with big ears

The leading position in ear size among wild cats is occupied by the serval. With a height at the withers of 60–65 cm, the vertical and high-set ears of this animal can reach 50–55 mm. The caracal, which is more powerful and wider than the serval, has very large ears decorated with thick black tassels. The sand or sand cat, smaller in size than a domestic cat, has huge ears so wide that they extend onto the side of the head. The Chinese mountain cat, endemic to China, has large ears with distinctive lynx-like tufts. The long-tailed margay has large, almost round ears that practically do not narrow and are set wide apart.

Balinese (Balinese cat)

Another breed with large ears, which is related to the Siamese cat, therefore has a similar appearance to it and at the same time is practically not similar in character. Kittens are born completely snow-white and only with age acquire a characteristic color. Balinese are very fond of affection and tenderness, they have a playful character, but they do not tolerate being offended: even if it is a child, scratches and aggression cannot be avoided.

Prices for Balinese kittens range from 5,000-15,000 thousand rubles.

Balinese (Balinese cat)

Siberian cat

Average weight: male 5-7 kg, female 4-5 kg

This breed is considered the national Russian cat. In character, they are, surprisingly, similar to dogs. Yes Yes! They become attached to only one owner, follow him, get bored, protect him from rodents and greet him at the door with a loving look. Although they may not get along with another dog (already a real one) - competition for the owner’s attention, after all.

Their focus on people is generally on a cosmic level - if a Siberian sees that his person is busy, then he simply will not bother with him. This behavior of KOTA is nothing but admirable. And this breed of these big cats is recognized as hypoallergenic - but they are ideal, after all!

The most common colors of Siberians are black, gray, white, red and various combinations thereof.

These big cats are rightly called universal: they are peace-loving, good hunters, quickly adapt to new conditions, neat, love children, and fearless in the face of dangers. The huge “Siberian” gets along well with other pets, but if small animals (rodents, birds, fish, reptiles, etc.) live in the house, then there is a risk that they will be eaten by a furry predator.

Although the Siberian breed of domestic cats is not as active as, for example, Savannahs and Chausies, its representatives simply love to explore the surfaces of cabinets and other “high places”. In addition, “Siberians” welcome various toys. But the playfulness of these animals is combined with a sound mind: they will first think carefully, and then take the only right step. One of the characteristics of representatives of the Siberian breed is that they love to walk a lot in the fresh air in any weather.

Anyone who dreams of having a pet should not be afraid of the definition of “the largest,” thinking that such cat breeds can cause a lot of trouble. Here you need to take into account that a majestic pet will behave accordingly. Therefore, you can safely start choosing a mustachioed and tailed friend, throwing away all worries and doubts!

Ukrainian Levkoy

These cats are descendants of the Sphynx and have rather large ears, which are located on the top of the head and can be curled or point straight up. These graceful animals have a gentle disposition, do not remember evil and do not like loneliness. But pets require special care: the body must be wiped with warm water, and if irritation or peeling occurs, use creams and lotions.

The price of Levkoy kittens depends on their appearance (low-eared, straight-eared), gender and class and ranges from 5,000-20,000 rubles.

Ukrainian Levkoy

Cats with an elongated muzzle and large ears. The breed is Oriental. Health and care

Representatives of the Oriental breed do not need special care. Just like with any other cat, you need to pay attention to quite ordinary things:

  • Care for ears using veterinary lotions as they become dirty.
  • Keep your teeth clean by periodically brushing your teeth at home with cat toothpaste or visiting your cat's dentist.
  • Treatment for helminths once a quarter, even if the cat does not go outside.
  • Regular flea treatments.
  • Combing with a brush.
  • Wash if desired or use special dry powder shampoos if the cat is not in the mood for a bath.
  • Trimming claws if the Oriental refuses to use a scratching post. A haircut should be done about once a month.
  • Annual vaccination and medical examination: tests, blood, urine, ultrasound examination of the abdominal cavity.

This is a young and very rare breed, which is not yet bred in Russia, and on foreign sites the price is 650-1000 euros.

Serengeti

The cats are similar in appearance to the Savannah breed, but are smaller in size.
