Pro Plan Veterinary diets food for cats: reviews and composition analysis

Cat food Pro Plan (Pro Plan) belongs to the American company Purina. Enterprises producing rations are located in France, Italy and Russia. It should be noted that many feed components are delivered to the Russian plant from abroad.

In addition, foreign equipment has been installed at the enterprise. The diets are prepared strictly according to original recipes. Employees are previously trained by foreign colleagues and constantly improve their skills. Therapeutic diets are supplied to Russia only from European factories.

Manufacturer

The manufacturer of Pro Plan food is Nestle Purina PetCare Company.
It has existed for more than 80 years, and currently its team consists of approximately 18,000 employees and several hundred scientists. And it all started with horse meat. Yes, yes, ordinary horse meat! Horses that died of old age (or for other reasons) were fed to dogs, and a little later - in 1860 - the American James Spratt began producing the first commercial food.

The first company was founded in 1894: it was renamed several times, expanded, and production was modernized. Eventually the Nestle Purina PetCare Company was formed.

The head office was made in St. Louis, America, and the divisions were “scattered” all over the world: Oceania, Australia, Africa, Asia, Europe...

Manufacturers assure that in their work they are guided exclusively by the interests of animals and work for their benefit. Experts in the field of nutrition, veterinary medicine, formulation developers and even animal psychologists are involved in the work.

I am the owner of two charming cats. In the morning and evening I give them wet food (canned food), and during the day they usually eat dry food. Cats eat exclusively pate, that’s why I got Pro Plan pates. My cats eat it very well; they ate 3 jars in one evening. An hour after feeding they are already screaming and asking for more, if given, they eat, and eat, and eat. Here’s the question: where does it go with them?! On this food they were always hungry and even lost weight, although they ate an unprecedented amount of food. So I definitely won’t buy Pro Plan again. Empty food, apparently, since cats constantly want to eat. Well, I certainly didn’t expect 14% meat. I found a higher percentage of meat content in other premium foods.

One day we were lucky and won a package of Pro Plan Dental Plus dry cat food in an online competition. This food is intended for cats with dental problems. Since all my cats are taken from the street, some have such problems. One of the cats had a very strong smell from her mouth. The food granules are very large, like in food for large dogs. These granules are difficult for cats to chew. This is the only way teeth are cleaned! Therefore, there are a lot of crumbs left after the cats have eaten this food. The cats didn't even eat the whole package. I gave it to stray dogs. The food itself is of very poor quality. It made cats vomit, and the stool was bad. The general condition of the cats was not good. Moreover, several cats' eyes began to run very badly from this food - this has never happened before.

We fed our Highland Fold cat exactly this way and liked the food. The pieces are small in size and easy for the kitten to chew. They switched to it from milk, they took the girl when she was little, she didn’t yet know how to feed herself. I drank an egg and cream, milk, and later I started eating boiled chicken breast and right after that they added Junior Delicate. As adults, we switched to Delicate adult food, periodically alternating it with food for digestion and wool.

My cats, of which there are two, are distinguished by the fact that they immediately get sick from bad food. My veterinarian friend recommended ProPlan food. She loves animals very much and simply begged me never to feed them felix, kitiket and whiskey. She said that what these feeds are made from cannot be called food. Regarding ProPlan. This food is well balanced, very nutritious and economical. Suitable for all adult cats, including purebred cats. This plan is aimed at combating genitourinary diseases, which are very common in animals. It is sold not only in pet stores, but also in large supermarkets, so there are no problems with purchasing. My cats accept it in dry form just fine - and this is after many years of sitting on canned food. I noticed that they became more cheerful, their fur began to shine.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Sold in all pet stores, as well as in supermarkets.
  • Contains minerals and vitamins.
  • Pro Plan food is divided into dry and wet, and there is a line of medicinal food.
  • Despite the premium quality, these foods are noticeably more expensive than similar ones of the same group.
  • It is unknown what kind of antioxidants, preservatives and flavoring additives are used, since there are no specifications either on the packaging or on the official website.
  • The wording of the ingredients is again general. And this immediately raises a number of questions. How much of each component is added? How was it prepared?
  • There are too few plant components, including fiber.

Cat food Pro Plan - reviews

There are many pages on pet owner forums discussing Purina foods, including reviews of the Pro Plan brand. We've shared a few of those reviews below.

Reviews from veterinarians

I always explain to my clients that when choosing food, first of all you need to look at the composition. For example, in Dog Chow the first ingredients will be “cereals, meat and animal by-products, plant by-products”, in Pro Plan there will be “chicken 20%, dried poultry protein, wheat, rice”, in Akana there will be “Raw lamb meat (8%), fresh duck meat (8%), fresh whole eggs (8%), dehydrated lamb (8%), whole dehydrated herring (8%)”, etc. Thus, everything is known in comparison: Proplan is much better than Dog Chow, but much worse than Akana. While still analyzing the ingredients, you can notice another pattern - in good food, all the ingredients and the percentage of the main ingredients are always clearly indicated, while in bad food, general formulations are always written.

Customer Reviews

In our city, Pro Plan is one of the two most popular foods, the second being Royal Canin. Both can be found at any pet store. I used to feed her second, but after an illness in winter I decided to change the food. I note that the veterinarian said that the food is related to the disease. The new one was chosen from the premium class, since super-premium is too expensive, and economy is too useless. In general, I was looking for a balance between price and quality. I chose Pro Plan Sterilized (my cat is neutered), it is available in three different flavors: rabbit, salmon, turkey. True, the rabbit food contains mainly chicken, and the rest of the main component is 20%. It also contains vitamins necessary for cats, so you don’t have to buy them separately.

Compared to Royal Canin, the cat eats both foods equally well. I don’t limit his quantity; he eats as much as he wants. At the same time, excess weight is not gained (this is why it is important to buy special, lower-calorie food for castrated cats), and there are no other problems either.

On the Royal Canin packaging it is clearly stated that it was made in Russia, but on the Pro Plan it is written about France, Italy and Russia, depending on the labeling (FR, IT or RU). However, I did not find any of these markings on the packaging.

Hi all! I recently got a Russian Blue kitten. The breeder from whom I purchased him recommended ProPlan Junior if I feed him dry food. I found it in the store, was confused by the Purina inscription, my friends spoke poorly of One food from the same company, but decided to buy it anyway. I took a 400 g package of dry and also canned food of the same brand. The kitten really liked the canned food and quickly swept it off the plate. But he ate dry food extremely reluctantly, for this reason I had to give up Pro Plan food. I didn’t notice any problems with digestion, and my appearance also didn’t change during the short period of feeding. Then I asked my veterinarian friend and he praised this food. But what can I do, my baby seems to be picky.

We switched to Proplan dry food in order to save time and money. I don’t really want to cook separately for a cat, and it’s also not good to give it to people. In ready-made food, everything is balanced so as to satisfy exactly the needs of the cat’s body. The choice fell on Proplan drying because we had previously taken canned food of this brand and the cat liked it. A 1.5 kg bag is enough for our cat for 3 weeks, taking into account its cost it turns out to be about 40 rubles per day. I don’t consider this a big price to pay for saving time. Instead of cooking, I just opened it, poured it into a bowl and that’s it. In addition, the cat also approved of the dry food and eats it with pleasure. Looks good in appearance - shiny coat, stable weight, active and playful.

The only noticeable disadvantage is that the food quickly runs out of steam. If the cat has not eaten a portion, then it will not finish eating, apparently because it stops smelling. The smell from freshly opened food is also not strong. In general, we are satisfied with Proplan, I recommend you try it too!
