Review of Profender for cats

  • For cats weighing less than 2.5 kg – 0.35 ml;
  • For cats weighing less than 5 kg – 0.7 ml;
  • For cats weighing less than 8 kg – 1.12 ml.
  • Nematodes
    – toxocariasis, toxascariasis, hookworm disease. These parasites belong to the class of roundworms that infect the intestines and respiratory organs of the cat (lungs, bronchi, trachea). They can also live in the thickness of cat skin, causing allergic reactions and itching. If worms have chosen the intestines, the pet may experience blood in the stool, anemia, and in special cases, intestinal obstruction. If the respiratory system is damaged, bronchitis, pulmonary failure, and pneumonia may develop;
  • Cestodoses
    – dipylidiasis, taeniasis, echinococcosis. During the course of the disease, tapeworms fill the cat's small intestine, but if left untreated, the parasites can travel virtually throughout the body, affecting the cat's gastrointestinal tract, heart, liver, kidneys, eyes, and even the brain. In addition, most cestodes can migrate from cat to owner, causing many unpleasant consequences. Symptoms of cestodiasis include weight loss, emaciated appearance, constipation or diarrhea, and vomiting. Depending on the location of the worms, the cat may experience, for example, heart failure, tachycardia (if the heart is damaged), blindness (if the eyes are damaged), ascites (if the liver is damaged) and many other complications.

Composition and properties of the drug

"Profender" is produced by German. The medicine takes the form of drops that are used to treat the animal’s withers. The drug is applied using pipettes contained in the package.

The main active components of the product are:

  • emodepsid. 1 ml of solution contains 21.4 mg. This is a peptide that has an antibiotic effect. Most effective against nematodes. It has a stimulating effect on latrophilin presynaptic receptors, provoking the death of parasites;
  • Praziquantel 1 ml of solution contains 85.8 mg. This substance causes damage to neuromuscular connections, leading to the death of worms due to disruption of energy exchange processes. It also causes polarization of ganglion blockers. Most effective in the fight against cestodes.

As auxiliary components, this medicine contains substances that accelerate the absorption of active compounds in the animal's body.

After use, the active substances of the drops penetrate first into the pet’s blood and then into the cells of the parasites. Due to its prolonged effect, the medicine is effective 3-4 days after use. The activity of the main active components remains for a month.

The package contains the drug itself and two pipettes for it (sealed in a blister made of aluminum foil). There are also instructions inside the cardboard box.

Properties of the drug

Profender for cats in the form of drops is a combination medicine that is used to rid a pet of helminths. It contains components that can provide a wide range of anthelmintic effects.

The medicine affects round and tapeworms : Toxacara cati destroys both adult and larval stages, Toxascaris leonine, Dipylidium caninum, Taenia taeniaeformis.

Emodepside is a semi-synthetic compound of the depsipeptide group. Has strong nematocidal properties. It has an effect on the nerve cells of the parasite, causing paralysis.

Praziquantel is active against gastrointestinal cystodes at any stage of their development. It affects the muscle innervation of parasites, causing paralysis. It blocks the absorption of glucose in cystodes and they soon die.

The product is well absorbed into the body and remains for a long time, providing a long-lasting therapeutic effect. A high concentration of Praziquantel in the blood is observed within 2-4 days from the moment of application. The drug is eliminated from the body after 30 days. In terms of its effects on the body, Profender is a class III drug of moderate danger. Application of the recommended dose does not cause irritation. The product is well tolerated by cats.

Profender is prescribed to cats for the prevention and treatment of worms.

Drops for external use. Before applying to the skin, the protective cap is removed from the pipette and, positioned vertically, the protective membrane of the package is pierced. It is necessary to spread the hair at the withers; it must be applied to places where the cat cannot reach and lick the preparation. The best place for application is the area of skin between the shoulder blades . When treating large cats, the drug is applied to the neck in several places.

The minimum dosage of Profender is 0.14 ml per 1 kilogram of cat weight.

Preventive measures using the drug Profender can be started from 8 weeks of age at the following dosage:

  • 0.5-2.5 kg - Profender for kittens. Dosage 0.35 ml.
  • 2.6-5 kg - Profender for medium-sized cats. Dosage 0.7 ml.
  • 5.1-8 kg - Profender for big cats. Dosage 1.2 ml.
  • 8 kg and more - I use a combination of different packaging.

For cats weighing more than 8 kg, Profender is prescribed at a rate of 0.14 ml per kilogram of weight. For treatment against worms, a single application of the drug is carried out, but for prevention it can be applied quarterly.

The drug is absorbed within 2 hours. After this time, the cat can be washed if necessary.

In case of overdose, cats experience increased drowsiness, sometimes vomiting, and tremors. If you notice serious side effects, the area where the product is applied should be rinsed with water.

If the drug is applied according to the instructions, no side effects are observed. But in rare cases, there are individual reactions: redness, itching. They go away on their own without requiring the intervention of medications. If an allergic reaction occurs, rinse the drug thoroughly with running water. In case of severe reactions, antihistamines should be administered. The use of Profender together with other deworming agents is strictly prohibited.

Contraindications and side effects

The use of Profender strictly according to the instructions for the drug does not cause side effects. Among the contraindications is the age of the pet. The use of Profender for kittens is possible only from 2 months, provided that their weight is more than 500 g.

Pregnancy, lactation, rehabilitation after illness, which are contraindicated for other anthelmintics, will not be an obstacle for Profender.

However, the cat may have an individual intolerance to the components of the drug

Therefore, when using for the first time, strictly follow the dosage and pay attention to the following symptoms: itching and redness of the skin at the site of application. If they appear, it is better to refuse Profender in the future.

Side effects

Profender is a safe drug, when used correctly, it does not cause adverse reactions. In rare cases (detected in less than 10 animals out of a sample of 10,000 individuals), allergic reactions occur - itching, rash. In extremely rare cases (less than one animal out of a sample of 10,000 individuals), increased salivation, tremors of the limbs, and vomiting are possible. Symptoms go away on their own and do not require contacting a veterinarian.

If the drug gets on the mucous membranes, wash them with warm water and soap. This rule applies to the pet and its owner. If the drug has been swallowed by a person, you should consult a doctor.

Instructions for use

The procedure for using Profender is simple. It is necessary to take the required dose of medicine (remove the cap from the pipette and pierce its protective membrane), part the cat’s fur in the area of the withers between the shoulder blades and squeeze the medicine onto the skin. The skin will absorb Profender in two hours. Be sure to make sure that your pet does not have the opportunity to reach the treatment site with his tongue. After using the pipette, immediately throw it in the trash, after wrapping it in a bag.

To perform the described procedure, it is necessary to calculate the dosage of the veterinary drug. The calculation is based on the weight of your cat in the following proportions:

  • 0.5-2.5 kg - 0.35 ml;
  • 2.5-5 kg - 0.7 ml;
  • 5-8 kg - 1.2 ml;
  • over 8 kg - the dosage is determined at the rate of 0.14 ml/1 kg of the pet’s weight (you need to combine pipettes of different packaging).

After treating your pet, wash your hands thoroughly and limit access to small children. During the day, the cat should not be bathed, and during this time, the cat should not be stroked. The components of the drug are toxic to the human body if ingested and can cause reactions such as poisoning and intoxication. The treatment procedure is performed once per quarter.

  2. Remove the cap from it and pierce the protective membrane with it.
  3. Using your hands, spread the fur on the cat’s back between the shoulder blades and drop Profender.

The pipette must be thrown into the trash; it must not be used for household purposes. Hands should be washed with soap after handling the cat.

Contraindications

The veterinary drug is contraindicated for kittens under 8 weeks of age, as well as representatives of the cat breed whose weight does not exceed 0.5 kilograms. If the cat’s body does not tolerate the components that make up Profender, then the drops cannot be used in this case.

Another reason why treatment with the drug is contraindicated is kidney and liver diseases (chronic). It is allowed to use drops on pregnant cats and those nursing kittens. Just be sure to ensure that the latter do not have access to the area treated with the medicine.

Pharmacology

Profender drops for cats will be effective against cestodes and nematodes. This means that the use of drops is justified when infected with roundworms and tapeworms.

Instructions for use of Profender drops

The effect of the medicine is standard and practically no different from other means used for deworming. The components included in Profender affect the nervous system of the parasite, which provokes the development of paralysis and subsequent death. The helminth loses its ability to stay on the surface of the gastrointestinal mucosa and is released naturally: along with the feces. The use of laxatives in cats is not necessary.

The auxiliary composition "Profender" is represented by substances that accelerate the absorption of medicinal components. Maximum concentration is achieved after two to four days from the time of use of the product. The period during which the drug provides protection for the cat is 20–30 days. "Profender" is excreted along with urine, without having a toxic effect on the renal system.

According to the instructions, the medicine is moderately dangerous. This means that the use of Profender drops in recommended dosages does not cause skin irritation, does not cause a teratogenic or mutagenic effect on embryos, and does not affect the formation of immunity after the vaccination procedure.

Studies have shown that the cat’s body responds adequately to three times the permissible standard dosage of Profender.

Composition and release form of the drug

Emodepside (21.4 mg per 1 ml) and praziquantel (85.8 mg per 1 ml) are the two main active ingredients that are part of these anthelmintic drops. The effectiveness of the drug is due to the paralyzing effect on the cells of roundworms and tapeworms that these two components have. This impact leaves no chance for parasites to destroy them.

The antiparasitic drug is made in the form of a liquid solution, which is packaged in special pipettes of 2 pieces, and then in foil blisters. Next, the drug is packaged in boxes with instructions. The packaging comes in different volumes, since the amount of medicine used depends on the weight of the pet. Drops

They have a yellow or brown color and an unpleasant, pungent odor. If the drug is used correctly, this is perhaps the only negative.

The method of use is also specific - the drops are intended not for internal, but for external use. This means that there is no need to force the cat to swallow Profender. Usually this, as well as the use of tablets, is quite problematic. All you need to do is treat your pet’s skin at the withers. Within 3-4 days, the medicine will enter the bloodstream and have a beneficial effect on the body for a month.

Mechanism of action

The medicine is a broad-spectrum drug against worms. This is ensured thanks to the main components of the drug, emodepside and praziquantel. They affect tapeworms and roundworms at all stages of their development (larva - immature individual - mature parasite). The components block the muscle activity of the parasite. It cannot attach to the intestinal walls and dies from starvation. Taking laxatives after using Profender is not required.

The main active ingredients work in one direction - the destruction of helminths. Description and properties:

  1. Emodepside is a semisynthetic depsipeptide with pronounced nematocidal properties. The drug stimulates certain groups of receptors, leading to paralysis and death of parasites.
  2. Praziquantel is a substance from the pyrazinisoquinoline group, effective against gastrointestinal cestodes at all stages of development. Praziquantel depolarizes neuromuscular parasite blockers, interfering with glucose transport. The process disrupts muscle innervation, which leads to paralysis and subsequent death of helminths.

Good absorption of the drug is due to its pharmacokinetic properties. The substance remains in the pet’s body for a long time. In blood serum, the main active components reach their maximum concentration after 2-4 days. Profender does not have a toxic effect on the liver and kidneys. The compounds are excreted after a month in urine and feces.

Properties of the drug and its effect

Profender is a combined broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug for deworming cats. The active components of the drops have a detrimental effect on tapeworms, as well as roundworms at various stages of their development.

The active ingredients of the drug include: emodepside and praziquantel, and the auxiliary ingredients: butylhydroxyanisole, isopropylidene glycerol and lactic acid. Emodepside and praziquantel, as a result of different mechanisms of action, cause paralysis in parasites, leading to their death.

When applied, Profender is well absorbed and remains in the cat’s body for a long period in a therapeutically required amount. Achieving the maximum concentration of the active substances of the drug in the animal’s blood serum is expected on days 2-4. The drug is excreted from the animal’s body naturally through urine and feces in about a month.

Profender is well tolerated by cats of all breeds and age groups. It is considered a moderately hazardous substance. When used in adequate doses, it does not cause local irritation or any other negative reactions of the body.

Composition and description

Instructions for use of Profender drops

Dirofen contains 2 active ingredients - febantel and pyrantel, excipients: calcium stearate, praziquantel, talc, lactose, aerosil, carboxylmethylcellulose. The mechanism of action of the drug is the paralysis of parasites due to neuromuscular blockade under the influence of pyrantel and the destruction of cells of the digestive system of helminths due to the action of febandel. The action of two active substances leads to the death of parasites and their removal naturally from the body.

The drug is available in the form of tablets Dirofen and Dirofen Plus. The first are intended for kittens and puppies, Dirofen Plus - tablets for adult cats and dogs. Medicines are produced in the form of tablets, 6 pieces per blister.
