Often, pet owners are faced with various behavioral problems of the latter. Cats that are naturally willful, but happily get along with people, may suddenly begin to show aggression. In fact, nothing happens for nothing, and if a cat attacks a person, then there are reasons for it. The owner of the animal can install them, but quite often only a veterinarian can do this, so do not put off going to the veterinary clinic. Especially in cases with a sharp change in the cat’s behavior.

Why do domestic cats become aggressive?

There is a situation when at one moment the cat begins to behave strangely.

But sometimes a cat attacks as an adult, and then the consequences of this become dangerous to human health.

This manifests itself in:

  • hissing;
  • bites;
  • scratching;
  • releasing claws;
  • damage to furniture.

There are several reasons why a pet develops aggression: stress, attempts to fight for territory, fear, reaction to a change in environment. Often, a cat's character can change after castration.

An important factor is the kitten's childhood. With severe stress at an early age, aggression can arise as a response to external threat and danger. Inappropriate behavior is inherent in some cat breeds. An example would be the Siamese and Persians.

Aggression often develops as a result of the appearance of a child in the family. Cats are freedom-loving animals; they do not like to be cuddled or entered into their personal territory. Children can hurt your pet by pulling its tail or stepping on its paw. This causes the cat extreme stress.

Tail

If a cat waves its tail or holds it too low, this indicates that the animal is irritated. If the pet is very angry, the hair on the tail stands on end. In such cases, it is better not to touch the cat or try to play with it. You need to wait until the animal calms down.

Types of aggression in cats

Aggression often develops as a result of the appearance of a child in the family.
There are several types of aggression that can develop in a pet:

  1. Intraspecific - occurs when there is enmity between two animals. Two pets find themselves close to each other without having time to get to know each other at a distance. The result is a struggle for status and territory.
  2. Redirected - happens when some irritating action constantly occurs near the pet. So, an animal may see another cat outside the window, but not be able to drive it away from the territory - aggression is taken out on the owner.
  3. The answer to affection is that the cat does not want to be petted. Often a person does not notice warning signs - the pet twitches its tail, the body is tense, and there is no rumbling heard. If the owner continues to pet the irritated animal, the attack will not be long in coming.
  4. Reaction to fear - the pet is driven into a corner, he sees no other way out but to attack the offender. Visual signs of fear in a cat are a tail tucked under the body and a closed, compressed posture. Children often become aggressors - they frighten the animal with loud sounds and annoying actions.
  5. Protecting territory - a cat often bites and scratches when its personal boundaries are violated. She hisses, takes fighting stances, raising his fur.
  6. Pain is the main stimulus for a cat to show aggression. If some place hurts, it is better not to touch her. Often the owner is unaware of the pet's health problem. These could be diseases or injuries.
  7. Excitement in the game - often young cats or kittens painfully bite the owner’s legs and arms during the game. The reason lies in upbringing. If a kitten is orphaned early or separated from its mother, aggression develops.

Attention! Aggression in three- and eight-month-old kittens is often caused by changing teeth.

How to calm a cat

What to do if your pet gets angry? It is important to remember that anger in animals is a sign of fear. Most likely, your pet is scared of something. Try to leave the cat alone for a while - let it calm down. Do not scold or punish her, this will only cause a new attack of aggression.

After the animal calms down, give it some water or food. Talk to him in a quiet, gentle voice. This will minimize manifestations of aggression and anger.

It is advisable to stop aggressive behavior if possible:

  • shout loudly at the cat;
  • make a sharp, ringing noise with a handy object;
  • make a clap with your hands.

Sharp sounds will scare away the animal, forcing it to stop trying to bite the owner's hand.

You can also use a spray bottle of water, sprinkling it on the cat when biting. When trying to scratch your hand or furniture, it is recommended to use a towel or rag. You should throw a cloth over the enraged cat, thereby catching it by surprise.

The cat chews everything, what should I do?

You can also use a spray bottle of water, splashing the cat while biting.
This behavior is due to several reasons:

  1. Designation of your territory. Young cats imitate the behavior of adults in this way. This is instinct, this is how they mark their territory. In this case, weaning the cat from the addiction is relatively simple.
  2. Changing teeth. By chewing things, the cat satisfies the need to scratch its gums and relieve itching. A visit to the veterinarian will help eliminate this phenomenon. He will tell you what is best to feed your pet to help him.
  3. Need for attention. Having noticed that the cat is chewing things, you need to use gentle methods of education in relation to it, and caress it more. You should also monitor his well-being and contact a veterinarian if necessary.

How to stop a cat from chewing

To wean an animal from this habit, you should:

  1. Isolate things that are of interest to the cat . Cables and wires in the room should be hidden in thick fabric or inside baseboards, small items should be placed in cabinets or on shelves.
  2. If insulation is impossible, it is recommended to spray things and doors with substances that emit a pungent odor. A vinegar solution, lemon juice, or a spray bottle sold in pet stores will work.
  3. Place indoor plants on a closed balcony or high on a closet where the pet does not have access. Flowers may contain toxins, which will be harmful to his health. Instead, it is advisable to plant wheat or oat seeds in a small container and place them on the windowsill.
  4. Buy special toys for your cat with balls inside. They will distract your pet's attention. You should not use your own hands as toys for your cat.

Advice! You can make a toy yourself from scrap materials. It is recommended to put catnip or sage inside.

When to contact a veterinarian

Mexico, 2021. A surveillance camera captured the moment a cat brutally attacked a man. A video distributed on the Internet shows a man walking when a cat suddenly pounces on him, grabs his leg and bites him.

At the very beginning of the cat's attack, the gentleman falls to the floor and starts kicking him to escape from the animal, which constantly scratches and does not want to let him go.

Another man who was present during the incident tried to protect the man with a chair and hit the cat with it, but also hit the victim several times.

Moments later, when the situation was a little more under control, the same man punched the cat several times, and the victim of the attack grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and managed to get rid of him.

Russia, October 2021. A Moscow man faces up to five years in prison for using a cat as a weapon to attack a police officer, Russian media reported.

The suspect, identified as Gennady Shcherbakov, reportedly shook and threw the cat when a police officer approached him in a city apartment building.

An officer who was responding to noise complaints from residents was "seriously scratched" in the face. 59-year-old Shcherbakov has been charged with using violence against a government official.

The case was opened on October 30, more than a year after the incident, the Baza telegram channel reports.

What supposedly happened? According to Russian broadcaster Ren TV, on October 4, 2021, Shcherbakov was sitting at the base of the stairs in a residential building in the Russian capital. He was allegedly very drunk.

Residents reported disturbances, but when a police officer met Shcherbakov near the stairs and asked him to stop disturbing public order, he refused to cooperate or answer any questions, Ren TV reported. After that, Shcherbakov grabbed his cat, which was next to him, and threw it at the officer. According to the investigation, he grabbed her at the withers, which angered the animal and forced her to release her claws. The animal reportedly grabbed the officer's face with its claws digging in.

Shcherbakov, who was not a resident of the apartment building where the incident occurred, denies using the cat as a weapon and claims it jumped on the officer of its own free will.

The case was filed under Article 318 of the Criminal Code, which deals with the use of violence against a public official. It is unclear why it took a year to open a criminal case or what happened to the cat.
