A year ago, my husband and I began to notice that a light ginger cat periodically appeared in the yard of our house. He will remain in sight for some time, then disappears. However, the cat turned out to be very persistent and punctual in his visits to our territory. When one day we saw him again sitting under the mesquite tree, my husband, just in case, put some food in the bowl, showed it to the cat and went into the house. The cat turned out to be very smart, quickly went to the bowl and ate everything.

He was a handsome blond, with luxurious fur and a fluffy tail, of which he was very proud. We named him Thomas. From then on, he visited us almost every day, sat down near the house so that we would definitely see him, and waited for dinner to be served. Of course, he received delicious cat food and milk, which he was a big fan of. This went on for several months, and my husband decided that it was time to invite Thomas to our home, and I thought to myself that “the hopes of the young men were high.”

Preparations for the visit of our dear guest took a long time and involved rehearsals: it was decided to open the door, show Thomas his food, and leave the premises. Everything went like clockwork. The next time the cat came, we opened the door to the room where there was a plate of food in the most visible place, and we hid to watch...

Thomas went to the door and, sensing the smell of food, stopped on the threshold of our home, thought for about five minutes, and decided on a “feat of unparalleled strength”! He entered, looked around and busily headed towards the familiar bowl. After the food was eaten, he calmly and slowly went outside. From that moment on, “His Excellency” Thomas dined only in the dining room. The obligatory conditions of the “tacit agreement” between us and the cat were an open door and his untouchability.

One evening I noticed a black cat and four kittens in the yard, happily playing with each other. “Well, another batch of wild cats!” - I thought to myself. Two kittens were red, one was black and red, and the fourth was very similar to its mother. After some time we saw a black mother cat in the company of Thomas. Then it dawned on us that this was a complete cat family: dad, mom and four kids. To begin with, we gave names to the new family members. The black mother was named Midnight (Midnight), the red fluffy kitten, who was like two peas in a pod, was named Mini-Thomas (MT), the red short-haired cat became Pumpkin (Pumpkin), the second cat with motley fur was Kali and the last the black cat began to bear the name Shadow (Shadow).

Very soon the whole family was safely supported by us. The kittens slowly grew up, became independent and came to “gulp” any time they wanted. Thomas and Midnight spent a lot of time together. If one of them lost the other, then he (a) began to run throughout the entire territory and loudly call for his spouse. I naively believed that cats somehow didn’t care which cat was next to him. But this was true love! And they still have such mutual affection for each other.

At first, the relationship between parents and children really touched me. If Midnight or Thomas were the first at the food and began to eat it, then the kittens calmly waited for one of the parents to finish the meal. I once watched such a scene. Four tailed, prankish kittens came running first, received their treat and began to gobble it up with great appetite. At this time Thomas arrived and saw that he was slightly late for the start of lunch. He sat to the side and waited for his turn to come. But all the emotions were written on his “face”: “I’m in charge here! A little more and I’ll disperse you all!” I was able to capture this historical moment.

As soon as the kittens became fully grown, Thomas showed his tough temperament. Mini Thomas was the first to be persecuted. Dad pounced on him during the next meeting “at the dinner table” and, having bitten him thoroughly, instilled in him a simple thought: “This is my territory, I am the only male owner here!” Rewind your fishing rods! After this, MT came apprehensively to dinner several times, and then disappeared completely. Shadow was the second to feel the danger. He disappeared suddenly and forever.

The “girls” Kali and Pumpkin visited us the longest, but they also had their turn. Or rather, Thomas took turns biting them thoroughly, and the pussies disappeared into the evening twilight. Now they could be seen only occasionally, when they timidly ran past the “domains of their ancestors.” These observations of our cat company led me to the conclusion that the American cat family lives according to American laws: adult children must live separately from their parents...

By the way, Thomas turned out to be an incredibly smart cat. He immediately adopted his name. One day he came to the patio late in the evening; of course, we didn’t see him. He jumped onto the table, at which time the light came on (the photocell worked). We saw him, gave him food, and everyone was happy. From then on, every time he came to the door of the house in the evening, he did this trick with the light.

If he wanted extra food, he was sure to say “meow” only ONCE. One day I saw Thomas slowly climbing onto the roof using a metal stepladder. The distance between the bars was equal to the length of his body, but he performed this climb very masterfully, apparently not for the first time. What was he doing on the roof? I caught birds, of which there are plenty here.

I continue to observe the life of a cat couple in love, and I never cease to be amazed at how romantic their relationship is. When they meet, they begin to lick each other and purr. This is our friendly family!
