Antihelminthic drugs can be used both for the treatment of helminthiasis after appropriate tests, and for preventive purposes. For prevention, it is possible to reduce the dose by 1.5-2 times. Before using any drug, it is better to consult a pharmacist and doctor, taking into account all possible contraindications and adverse reactions.

Pharmacokinetics

After taking albendazole, up to 45% of the administered dose is absorbed into the blood. Given the complex stomach of ruminants, the drug may take longer to absorb. The medicine is absorbed, metabolized in the liver, converted into albendazole sulfoxide, which also has anthelmintic effectiveness.

The sulfoxide is then metabolized into sulfone, which has no anthelmintic activity. Albendazole fights adult worms, as well as their immature forms, in various tissues and organs.

Excretion occurs through bile and feces, as well as urine.

In ruminants, 60-70% of the administered dose is excreted in the urine in the form of various metabolites, the main of which is sulfoxide. In sheep, about 14% of the administered dose is excreted through bile, partly in the form of active metabolites, which allows effective anthelmintic concentrations to be achieved in the bile ducts.

In dogs, cats and birds, given the difference in the structure of the digestive system with ruminants, the residual effect is greatly reduced. This may require higher doses or more frequent treatments to achieve the desired effectiveness. In sheep and goats, albendazole sulfoxide is detectable in plasma for 3 days, in dogs - less than 12 hours.

Albendazole is added to the feed, therapy is carried out both individually and in groups. The dosage is calculated based on the weight of the animal.

Before mass treatment, it is first recommended to conduct a test on several animals to avoid unpleasant consequences in the entire population.

Albendazole in the treatment of animals

The dose is affected by the type of worms. To prevent negative consequences, you need to carefully read the instructions included with the medicine.

  • For weights exceeding 60 kg, no more than 800 mg is recommended.
  • When weight is less than 60 kg - 400 mg.
  • The medicine is used for children, taking into account their age - 200-400 mg per day.

A certain type of helminth requires a certain application:

  • Opisthorchiasis and clonorchiasis. Drink 400 mg for 3 days.
  • Enterobiasis, ascariasis and hookworm. A child under 1 year old can take 200 mg per day, and adults up to 400 mg.
  • Strogiloidiasis and hymenolepiasis. Three days - 400 mg. The course of therapy must be repeated after 21 days.
  • "Migratory larva." 400 mg - 3 days.
  • Giardiasis. Prescribed for children from 2 years of age - 400 mg. Therapy lasts 5 days.
  • Alveolar echinococcus. If the patient’s weight exceeds 60 kg, then he should take 800 mg in 2 doses for 2 weeks. Then, there is a break.
  • Helminthic infestations. Therapy is prescribed taking into account the type of helminth, the patient’s weight and the severity of the pathology. The maximum dose is 800 mg. Therapy can be repeated 3 times.

This drug is often used in veterinary medicine, but they use a product specifically designed for animals.

The medicine is given to animals in a group manner. The course of treatment is usually no more than 2 days. The product is mixed into the morning food. Albendazole in gel form is best. It is strictly forbidden to add it to hot food for pregnant animals, otherwise malformed offspring may appear.

Dosage

The dose is calculated taking into account the type of animal, its well-being and weight.

Standard dose definition (1 mg per 10 kg):

  • Horses - 70 mg in the presence of ascariasis and mixed helminthiasis.
  • Sheep - 150 mg for dicroceliosis, 75 mg for fascioliasis, 50 mg for pulmonary nematodes.
  • Cattle - 100 mg for ascariasis and fascioliasis, 75 mg for various nematodes.
  • Birds - 100 mg for ascariasis and combined helminthiasis.

Side effects and contraindications

If you adhere to the recommended dosages when using albendazole, then undesirable effects do not occur. In some cases, the animal experiences weakness, refusal to eat, constipation or diarrhea. If the dosage is exceeded, poisoning cannot be ruled out.

It is forbidden to carry out treatment during the mating period, or to give food with the addition of the drug to pregnant females. Contraindications also apply to the lactation period. It is not recommended to use the medicine to treat animals with infectious diseases that have led to weakened immunity.

Small or medium-sized cattle are not allowed to be slaughtered less than 10 days after treatment. For cattle this period is 2 weeks. The bird can be used for food 5 days after treatment. Milk and eggs are allowed to be consumed after 4 days.

Mode of application

The drug is prescribed to the following types of animals:

If a livestock breeder plans to carry out mass treatment of the entire livestock, it is recommended to test the effect of the drug on a control group. Select 5-15 individuals of different fatness, apply the medicine according to the instructions. Observe for two days; if there are no symptoms of intoxication, deworming of the entire herd begins.

Albendazole for cattle

For large ruminants, mainly the dry form of the veterinary drug is used once. The dosage depends on the concentration of the active substance. For example, when using granulate 10% against nematodes and cestodes, 7.5 is recommended; trematodes - 10 g/100 kg weight.

Albendazole for MRS

For sheep and goats, Albendazole 10 for nematodes and tapeworm infections is fed once, mixed with concentrates at the rate of 0.1 kg per head. An animal weighing 40 kg should consume 2 g of the drug. The flock is divided into groups of no more than 150. The feed mixture is distributed into feeders, ensuring free access. If ruminants are diagnosed with fascioliasis or dicroceliosis, the dosage is increased by one and a half times. In homestead farming, when keeping small livestock, it is convenient to use the suspension individually.

Albendazole for pigs

Albendazole is effective against nematodes in pigs. Deworming is carried out on a group of 50 animals or less. Albendazole granules 10% are mixed with half a portion of feed 10 g/100 kg weight. If the drug is used in a different form or with a different concentration of the active substance, for example, Albendazole 20, the dosage is carried out according to the instructions.

Albendazole for horses

For deworming horses, the drug is used individually. If Albendazole 10 is used, then it is given with a dose of 7–7.5 g/100 kg of weight. It is permissible to use tablets after crushing them.

Albendazole for fur animals

Use any of the convenient forms. If animals are fed wet food, it is preferable to give a suspension. When feed is used, granulate is added.

Since animals have a short alimentary tract, the active substance does not have time to be completely absorbed. Therefore, the treatment is repeated the next day. The dosage is carried out according to the instructions, depending on the concentration of Albendazole in the drug.

Albendazole for cats and dogs

For pets, the medicine is prescribed in the form of a suspension, gel or tablets individually, for two days in a row. For large dogs, you can use a drug intended for farm animals. For pets of medium and small breeds, as well as cats, gel or tablets are produced under the trade name Alben S. It must be remembered that deworming should be carried out for two days in a row. Giving the pill to a pet requires certain skills.

If there is a need to deworm small puppies or kittens, you should carefully study the instructions, which indicate at what age this drug can be used.

Albendazole for poultry

Albendazole ultra 10 is recommended to be fed to birds if they have heteracidosis or ascarid infestation in an amount of 100 mg/kg body weight. The medicinal mixture is fed in the morning feeding for two days in a row. It is more convenient for poultry to calculate the required amount of the drug not by weight, but by the feed consumed. If a two-kilogram chicken requires approximately 100 g per day, then the Albendazole content in it should be 200 mg. Since the drug is given in the morning, its concentration must be doubled by adding 4 g of anthelmintic per 1 kg of feed.

Albendazole for fish

To deworm fish, granulated feed is produced, one ton of which contains 5 kg of Albendazole granulate 10%.

Compound

Anthelmintics differ in their active ingredients. Some drugs contain one active ingredient, others contain a combination of several.

Substance Spectrum of action Peculiarities
Pyrantela pamoate Sexually mature roundworms (nematodes) Low toxicity, acts only in the intestines, therefore it is allowed for kittens from 3 weeks of age. Complex preparations based on pyrantel pamoate - “Dironet”, “Dironet Junior”.
Praziquantel Tapeworms (cestodes) It has a spectrum of anthelmintic action aimed at flatworms. A single drug based on it is “Azinox”, among complex products are “Alben S”, “Dironet”, “Febtal-combo”, “Dironet spot-on”.
Fenbendazole Roundworms and tapeworms (nematodes and cestodes) The low toxicity of drugs based on it makes it possible to use them in pregnant and lactating females. The products require high doses or repeated use. Fenbendazole is contained in Febtal tablets.
Albendazole Adult roundworms and tapeworms, their larvae (nematodes and cestodes) Has the widest spectrum of action. Used in the treatment of certain larval helminthiasis, but strictly under the supervision of a doctor. Albendazole is contained in complex preparations - Alben S tablets and Febtal-combo suspension.
Ivermectin Roundworms (nematodes) and ectoparasites (ticks, fleas, lice eaters) Wide spectrum of action, but some breeds (collie, sheltie, bobtail) are intolerant. Contained in the Dironet suspension and Dironet spot-on drops on the withers.

Not long ago my health condition worsened. I began to feel constant fatigue, headaches, laziness and some kind of endless apathy appeared. Problems also appeared with the gastrointestinal tract: bloating, diarrhea, pain and bad breath.

I thought it was because of the hard work and hoped that it would go away on its own. But every day I felt worse. The doctors couldn’t really say anything either. Everything seems to be normal, but I feel like my body is not healthy.

I decided to go to a private clinic. Here I was advised, in addition to general tests, to get tested for parasites. So in one of the tests they found parasites in me. According to doctors, these were worms, which 90% of people have and almost everyone is infected, to a greater or lesser extent.

I was prescribed a course of antiparasitic medications. But it didn’t give me any results. A week later, a friend sent me a link to an article where some parasitologist shared real tips on fighting parasites. This article literally saved my life. I followed all the advice that was there and after a couple of days I felt much better!

Digestion improved, headaches went away and the vital energy that I so lacked appeared. To be sure, I took the tests again and no parasites were found!

The most effective drugs for worms

Anti-worm medications, or, as they are also called, anthelmintic tablets, are used for various types of helminthiasis in the body. Medicines for helminths are universal and individual, separately for each type of parasite. For a very long time, only herbal preparations were used for worms in humans, sometimes quite toxic, such as chenopodia oil from anthelmintic marigold.

General information

In Russia there are currently more than 70 types of worms, so any medicine for worms for a person should be selected exclusively by the attending physician based on the diagnosis.

We invite you to read: Appenzeller Mountain Dog - large overview of the breed

Almost all children under 7 years of age are carriers of parasites such as pinworms; lamblia and roundworms are often found in children's bodies.

All parasites are divided into:

  • trematodes;
  • cestodes;
  • nematodes.

Each of this species is sensitive only to certain types of medicine, so not every remedy will be effective. And also the choice of drug will be greatly influenced not only by the type of helminth in the body, but also by the age of the patient, you need to note the pre-morbid state of the child, the state of health, and individual intolerance. Therefore, only a doctor can calculate the drug and dosage individually.

Types of worms

Let's take a closer look at the main types of worms that affect the body. There are only three of them:

  • Nematodes or roundworms. The most common types of worms. As their name suggests, they have a round body when cut open. They are only a couple of millimeters in length and can reach as much as 45 cm. Trichina, pinworms, roundworms and whipworms are most often found in human bodies. They live in the intestinal tract.
  • Flukes and flukes, or flatworms. They have a wide flat body. Such worms can be up to 1.5 meters. In the body they are attached using suction cups located on the head. Typical representatives of flatworms are the liver fluke and the cat fluke. They live throughout the body, from the iron ducts to the eyes.
  • Tapeworms. Flatworms are from 12 to 18 meters long, with suckers on the head. They always grow in intermediate organisms, and these are always animals. Representatives are bovine and pork tapeworms and broad tapeworm. They live in the small intestine, but can also live in other organs.

Each product has its own operating principle. But the mechanism of tablets against worms is mainly broad-spectrum, approximately one of the following:

  • the tablet suppresses glycolysis, causing the worm to become completely paralyzed and die;
  • the worms stop producing cellular tubulin, the worms’ feeding process is disrupted, and they die;
  • the tablets disrupt the intestines of the parasites, glucose cannot be utilized, and the worm dies;
  • medicine for worms disables the neuromuscular system of the worms, they experience paralysis, due to which they lose the ability to attach to the intestines, and are simply eliminated from the body;
  • The impenetrable protective cuticle of the worms is destroyed, they become susceptible to calcium and will be digested accordingly by the body.

Properly selected drugs against worms quickly kill them, and either the body digests them completely or partially, or can excrete them unchanged along with feces.

Anti-worm tablets for humans are very strong, since worms are highly resistant to various types of medications, so side effects are not uncommon:

  • Toxic effects on the body. First of all, it goes to blood and liver cells.
  • The immune system suffers.
  • If there were a lot of worms, after their death there is a risk of toxicosis.
  • Intestinal dysfunction.
  • Weakness, headaches.
  • Insomnia.
  • Allergy.

To minimize all these side effects, you must follow the instructions and dosage prescribed in the tablet insert, as well as the one prescribed by the doctor.

Tablets against worms cannot be used:

  • during pregnancy;
  • during breastfeeding;
  • suffering from viral and infectious diseases;
  • for intestinal infections;
  • in case of individual intolerance to any component included in deworming products.

If someone in the family has pinworms or nematodes that are transmitted through household means, then the whole family needs a preventive course against worms for children and adults. It should be taken into account that almost all children under seven years old suffer from pinworms, and it is very easy to become infected with them:

  • upon contact with an infected child;
  • through wool;
  • through bed linen;
  • through various household items.

But 80% of adults also suffer from worms, even if they themselves do not suspect it. But on the issue of prevention, the opinions of specialists differ radically. Some believe that you can drink even the most effective remedy for worms when they are not there, but at the same time become infected with them the very next day. And the only thing that can save you from worms is basic personal and intimate hygiene, daily change of underwear and frequent hand washing, especially after going outside; nothing else will help that much.

In this case, it is most recommended to carry out prevention for people who fall into this list:

  • Children. They often come into contact with children and play, not always maintaining hygiene.
  • Pet owners.
  • If any family member has worms. Antiparasitic drugs are given to both children and adults.
  • After trips to any exotic countries.
  • Any sand play or farming activities.
  • Having a hobby. Football, beach volleyball, hunting, fishing and so on.

We invite you to read: Phosphalugel for dogs: instructions for use, dosage

You should not completely rely on tests, they are often inaccurate, so it should be done at least three times, always on different days, so that the result is more accurate. And even if the result is negative, but there are symptoms of infection, then treatment is still worthwhile.
