Parasites are very annoying to pets. A worm can not only ruin your pet’s life, undermine its health, it can simply kill your pet. Do not forget about the danger of such worms for the human body. A cat, like other living beings, is susceptible to pests. You should always check with a veterinarian and take care of the health of your tailed dog.

There are many medications available to combat helminths. One of the effective drugs is Cestal Cat (for cats). The product has long won its place of honor among similar medications and is considered one of the safest.

Indications for use

The main indication for the use of Cestal is the treatment of nematodes or cestodes in cats. The drug begins to act approximately 2 hours after taking the tablet. The effect is to contract the muscles of the tapeworms, which leads to their paralysis and inevitable death.

The action is due to an increase in the permeability of worm cell membranes for calcium ions. After the worms are destroyed, the product is naturally eliminated from the body. Helminthiases for which this drug is used:

  • uncinariasis;
  • toxascariasis;
  • hookworm disease;
  • dipylidiasis;
  • trichocephalosis;
  • diphyllobothriasis;
  • toxocariasis.

According to the recommendations of veterinarians, Cestal is given to the animal 2 weeks before vaccination. This is necessary for the prevention of helminthiasis. They can develop due to a weakened cat’s immunity after vaccination, in which a small dose of the virus is introduced into the body. If parasites already live in the animal’s body, they will begin to develop with greater force.

All animals are at risk of becoming infected with parasites. Cestal tablets not only help even in advanced stages of the disease, but also have a preventive effect. Not only street cats can develop worms. There are no less risks in an apartment.

Sources may be:

  • raw fish;
  • raw meat, minced meat;
  • outerwear;
  • flies;
  • dogs;
  • shoes.

Cestal is prescribed for various infestations caused by parasites.

It is very easy to notice that your pet has worms. The animal behaves sluggishly, often crawls with its butt on the carpet, and sleeps a lot. You can also recognize trouble by looking at its fur. It loses its shine and fades.

Cestal for cats - instructions for use of tablets

The drug helps with helminthic infestations such as uncinariasis, diphylobothrosis, toxocariasis, uncinariasis, hookworm disease and others.

Veterinarians around the world recommend that, for preventive purposes, anthelmintic should be given 2 weeks before vaccination. The fact is that introducing a small dose of the virus into a cat’s body greatly weakens the body. If the animal already has parasites, they will begin to multiply with even greater force, causing enormous harm to health. Cestal will protect you and increase your overall immunity.

Characteristics, composition and properties

Cestal contains the following substances:

  • Pyrantela Embonate.
  • Praziquantel.
  • Vitamin E.
  • Carbohydrates.
  • Palm oil.
  • Starch.

The characteristic features of Kat can be identified as follows:

  • The tablets are stored for two years. Be sure to keep it in a dark, dry place. Storage temperature is fifteen to twenty-five degrees plus.
  • Before administration, the cat may not be on a diet.
  • It can be given according to the instructions only to babies over three weeks of age.
  • Cestal should not be used together with certain anthelmintics (Piperazine).
  • Do not use on four-legged animals with a sensitive allergen threshold. For most, it does not cause side effects such as allergies.

Optimal storage conditions

Since Cestal for cats contains quite strong antiparasitic components, the storage conditions recommended by the manufacturer must be followed exactly, since otherwise the therapeutic effectiveness of the product will inevitably suffer. To prevent this from happening, the following rules must be followed:

  • Storage temperature must be maintained in the range from 15° to 25° Celsius. Short-term frosts are not recommended, but nothing bad will happen. Again, the medicine is not afraid of short-term “warming up” above 25°C, but for no more than three days. In other situations, the active components begin to deteriorate, and the therapeutic effectiveness drops significantly.
  • Cestal should be stored in places completely isolated from the access of small children and pets.

How does it work?

The main filling components of the tablets paralyze worms inside the body.

  1. Pyrantel is intended to neutralize nematodes (roundworms). This material causes a nerve-paralytic reaction in parasites and subsequently they are eliminated from the body naturally. Effective on worms of different ages, except larvae. Symptoms of nematodes for cats are: eating feces, decreased or increased appetite, upset stomach, even coughing, dull fur, impaired coordination, etc.
  2. Praziquantel destroys cestodes and trematodes. The first is a tapeworm, and the second is a sucking worm. This component paralyzes the parasite (it breaks away from the intestinal wall), and the body begins to digest it like regular food. Symptoms of the described helminths for a pet: constipation or diarrhea, discharge from the eyes, psychological apathy, hair in clumps.

Important!

Infection with worms can occur: from mother to baby, very often from rodents infected with worms, through the skin, food, ingested liquid, fish, fleas, etc.

Form of the drug

Liver flavored tablet, the main type of drug. It is intended for oral use. Sometimes it is administered in the form of a solution (preliminarily crushed and injected onto the tongue with a syringe without a needle).

Who are helminths?

Helminths, or as we used to call them - worms, are parasitic worms that settle in the intestines or other organs of a cat and feed on its blood or plasma.

Infection occurs through communication with the carrier, through feeding raw fish or meat, or through contact with soil or grass on which the parasite eggs have settled.

It is also not uncommon for an animal to be infected directly by its owner, carrying helminth eggs on clothes, shoes, and even on his hands.

We will consider the most common parasites in cats below.

Nematodes or roundworms

They are one of the most common endoparasites found in cats. They are a small thin worm. Basically, its length does not exceed two centimeters, but there have been cases in which the nematode reached a length of up to 10 centimeters.

Lives in the intestines, attaching to its walls. It multiplies at high speed and can cause serious consequences, including death, especially in young individuals.

Nematode eggs can be detected in animal feces no earlier than 14 days after infection.

Cestodes or tapeworms

This helminth is much larger than its round relative and can reach a length of up to 80 centimeters. It is called ribbon because of its appearance - long and flat, divided into segments. It lives in the small intestine of a cat, feeding, like the nematode, on the blood of the host. It is very easy to detect this parasite - when it matures, the segment with eggs inside is separated from the body of the worm and comes out with feces. The eggs of the cestode are quite large and visible to the naked eye.

It is important to know that fleas are also one of the main carriers of worms in cats, so if you find them on a cat, be sure to take care not only of flea drops, but also of a high-quality deworming drug.

When is it used?

Cestal is used for cats when parasites appear in the animal, general symptoms of the appearance of helminths:

  • the cat has lost its usual taste preferences;
  • general health and psychological state have deteriorated;
  • the wool becomes faded and of poor quality;
  • the appearance of atypical discharge in the eye area;
  • problems with the gastrointestinal tract, bloating;
  • pale mucous membrane – signs of anemia;
  • blood appears in the stool, there may be worms in the stool;
  • The cat often licks the anus.

Important!

If these signs occur, it is better to consult a doctor, and he will prescribe a purely individual treatment for each four-legged animal.

Why are parasites dangerous?

By settling in a cat's body, parasitic worms cause enormous harm to its health. Intestinal helminths injure the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines, causing internal bleeding and pain. If they multiply excessively, worms can cause obstruction of the intestinal tube. Parasites take away a significant portion of the nutrients, thereby causing the animal to lose weight and lose immunity. Worms produce a large amount of waste products, which are toxins for the host animal. Intoxication and destruction of the tissues of the affected organs, primarily the liver, begins.

Pulmonary helminths, affecting the respiratory organs at a certain stage, cause shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. This directly makes breathing difficult. Heartworms in cats impair the blood supply to the body. Once in the heart, heartworms do not leave it and ultimately cause sudden death of the animal due to cardiac arrest.

How to use?

If it is not possible to quickly consult a veterinarian, you need to start treatment at home. The correct dosage for one norm is one-fourth of a tablet, per kilogram of the tailed friend’s weight (weight must be taken into account).

How to use the product?

  • the ground product (or solution) is transferred to the animal’s mouth, onto the tongue;
  • taken in crushed form, and subsequently mixed with food;

Even the attractive taste of liver cannot make a pet respond adequately to the medicine. Often, owners need to be given anthelmintic forcibly. How does this happen?

  • Two people hold the animal to prevent it from moving. In this case, you need to wrap the cat in fabric.
  • Light touches should be applied to the corners of the mouth. In this case, the pet should not move, but its mouth should open.
  • The tablet should move onto the tongue.
  • This should be followed by stroking the neck, the animal will swallow the medicine.
  • Then add some water into your mouth from a syringe.

One procedure is often enough for recovery. If one session is not enough, you can repeat it after fourteen days. For preventive purposes, the instructions recommend the use of Cestal once every three months.

The general dosage, as you can see, is formed taking into account the weight of the quadruped. More expanded - it looks like this:

  • if the weight is up to one kg. give - 0.25 from a tablet (with a weight of one or two kilograms - the dose does not change) - this amount is taken by pregnant cats and kittens, and such treatment should be carried out strictly under the supervision of a veterinarian;
  • two to four kg – one (adults);
  • from four to eight – two;
  • eight - three.

Additional Information. The tablets are used for pets two weeks before vaccination and the same period of use before mating.

Breeders' reviews:

Peter: I recently picked up a kitten on the street, since mine died 2 months ago, and living without a pet is still somehow boring. The cat is black with old spots, very beautiful, but he was found to have parasites. My brother treated his cats with Cestal, so on his recommendation I bought these tablets. Sema (that’s what I named the cat) categorically refused to swallow the pill, so I had to get creative. Each time I ground it into powder, and then rolled the finely chopped sausage in the powder. I can recommend this method of taking medications to all cat owners. In less than a week, the cat recovered, as he began to eat well and go to the toilet. Next week I'm going to take Sema to see the veterinarian. They will do a full health examination, and then I will definitely be able to be convinced or be disappointed in the effectiveness of Cestal.

Ulyana: Cestal is an excellent anthelmintic; I became convinced of its effectiveness a month ago. No side effects were found after using the product. But still, I highly recommend sticking to the dosage prescribed by your veterinarian. In general, using tablets is convenient, since I don’t like suspensions at all, since I have to tinker with them for a long time. I bought the tablets at a veterinary pharmacy for only 500 rubles, there were 10 tablets in the package. We used 5 tablets during treatment, so we still have 5 left (I think this is enough for further prevention).

Kirill: My wife and I chose an effective remedy for a very long time, but our eyes settled on Cestal. I immediately realized that this is an excellent product, because it contains 2 active ingredients. Our cat simply refused to take the pill, we made as many as 4 attempts. Therefore, I had to add tablet powder to canned cat food. Advice for the future - add powder to a single portion of the feed. Within a week, we noticed that Musya’s health had improved. We bought the tablets for 470 rubles, and I was very surprised by the cost, since on the Internet there were price tags of 700 rubles and more.

Advantages and disadvantages

Any medicine has its supporters and opponents.

As we see, there are many more advantages - this is a sign of the effectiveness of Cestal.
